Default SCCA Changes rules to attract PCAers

I have been hamering away at SCCA for awhile to make their rules more PCA racer friendly.

Here is what we have gotten in GT2 the last year or so:
up to 3.4l 914s
up to 3.8l 911s
weight reductions on the 911s (thanks to Bob Barnes & Dave Finch)
18" wheels for 911s

Here is the latest (weights are with driver):

1.Porsche 911 Coupe & Targa (1968-), p. 56, add to the notes as follows:
3.8L 2 valve DOHC unrestricted @2380 lbs. 18" wheels allowed (10" F
and 12" R allowed with 50 lb penalty.Correct the last sentence of the notes
as follows: Alternate engines: 3.2L 2valve DOHC @ 2160, 3.4L 2 valve
DOHC @ 2220, 3.6L 2 valve DOHC w/35.5mm SIR @ 2160 lbs, 3.8L 2 valve
DOHC w/ 36.5mm SIR @ 2280 lbs.

That means most PCA GT racers can take off their big wings and come race GT2 in SCCA, no new wheels to buy, no small motors to build. With SCCA you can win some tires from goodyear and hoosier, they give trophies and you get a chance to compete in the superbowl of amateur racing, the SCCA runoffs.

We still have to deal with the factory 930 tail on the 911s, or just a flat rear spoiler.

If anyone has any questions about SCCA GT racing send me an email.

where do they find these DOHC 911 engines? Can we still use the SOHC engines? Still, the rules sound like a good deal if they did not really require twin cam engines.

Maybe they consider one cam for each bank of three cylinders a twin cam engine??

Interesting way of looking at it. Does that mean the Boxster and the 996 are QOHC engines?

yep! remember, any production vehicle on DOTs!! basically any non production race car. so cup cars and comp coupes are out, but speed GT vets, tt 911s, and GTOs are still game as well as 928s with 7 liters!

Mark - Just wanted to say that it was a lot of fun watching you and Mike Allen go at it on Sunday. We were hanging out at the T4 grandstands between SM races.

thanks!! that was a lot of work!!! I guess my luck has run out with my garbage can hoosier method of keeping costs down. Just 4 months ago, on the TOYO RA1, we were running nothing slower than a 1:41.5 and more like mid 1:40s. It was everything i could do to keep my rear end from sliding out on every turn. (especially 2,3,5 , 9 and 11!!)

Mike Allen, sure has gotten faster and we had a great time. his car was almost dead on as fast, but owned me under braking and due to my tires, cornering and exit speeds. traffic was first my enemy and then ended up giving me a break that put mike back about 10 car lengths. we had a good laugh about the race in the paddock!

Now, im off to the dumpster to pitch all of my remaining Hoosiers. (unless it was due to hoosiers just not liking the cold temps (50-55f) I just never had tire problems like that before!)

thanks for watching the race!

Think it was Bob DeVore, but it didn't last long.

I believe the 996 Cup is also legal in GT2 as delivered from the factory. At least that is what my email from SCCA says...

Sure is! Is that your new car with my teammate Keith Alexander beside you? Sorry you had back luck at Atlanta. I bet I felt worse than you, smashing my new supercup 4 days after I bought it was sickening... but it worked out in the end.

I checked a recent Atlanta SCCA Natl race and Tom Patton GT2 Tiger, one of the 3 fastest GT2 cars in the USA, wasn't as fast as the times we were turning at Altanta last weekend. Hmmmm.. will soon find out if I can beat his times at Mid Ohio too, if so count me in at the runoffs.

It is great that SCCA is finally allowing dual plug engines and larger engines to run with them, thanks for your help!

Just some Data to throw around- seems the air cooled 3.4 (GT3 PCA) with huge wings (not SCCA legal) and a few hundred pounds less than SCCA weights still can't keep up with the stock GT3 cup cars according to the times at Atlanta last weekend and other races I have seen... so SCCA will need to give the air cooled cars more help to keep up. The air cooled cars get very delicate when tweeked that much, while the GT3s will keep running and running and are so easy to drive.
