993 vs. 996 for DE
Hi, everyone. I’m looking to move up from an 87 911 to either a 993 or a 996. The car’s primary use will be for Driver’s Ed. I run in the upper run groups (Red/Black), and although I can hang in there in the turns, I’m getting run over on the straights. All of the other 993 vs. 996 posts seem to be about street use, but my interest is strictly for the track so any thoughts on the matter (is the extra cost for a 996 really worth it???) from you all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
PS: I’m new here so please excuse if this is well covered ground.

Kev, thanks for the link. Lots of good info there! I should have mentioned that I want a car that’s still street legal, so no cup cars. Guess I’m going to have to go on a few test-drives . Thanks again.

At the risk of getting stoned to death, I'd go with the 996 particularly if straights are of concern. I think the 996 is somewhat unfairly maligned. Perhaps a bit of an unfair comparision, but my 96 993 C4 had no where near the ***** of my 2000 996. Its definitely a bit faster and torquier as well, plus it would probably be cheaper to acquire. On the flip side, theres no doubt the 993 is screwed together better.

Johnny,
They are both good. Just take your time, shop it, drive a few. Find a car you really like. The right color with the right options, something that works within your modification budget. Then.......... drive the wheels off of it!!!

Or maybe Jennifer Anniston is 996 and Katherine Zeta-Jones is a 993.You know you're getting older when all the hotties you like are in their thirties!

Johnny911, if the track is the place you live for, as it is with me, and you want a car that will be easy to live with and remain faster than you without spending tons of cash on upgrades just bite the bullet and get a GT3. Because the 997 is about to come out there are some really good deals on them now. It may be a stretch, it certainly was for me, but I promise you that it is worth it.

Macfly, if I could swing it, I’d just do the GT3 as you suggest and be done with it, but it’s over my budget. Rjay, thanks for your comments as well. I figured the 996 must be a bit quicker than the 993, but again, I have to wonder if the $20K premium for a 996 over a 993 (give or take depending on yr / mileages) is worth it? I guess all you guys are right, I’m going to have to get in both of these cars and let it rip. Oh, and Flying Finn (“993 is Angelina Jolie...”), I like that analogy, too. Thanks again all.

Finn,
I think I depends on how your cars are set up. Climbing into my 996 is a little like Uma Thurman in a bad mood while I'd describe my 993 cab as more of an Annette Benning. You know, a little older but still way gorgeous.
As for a 993 vs 996 on the track, I think I said my piece in the thread that was referenced above.
