Johnny, both are great on the track. Having a 993, I'm a little biased. I've racked up almost 75K miles on my car, with half probably driving to the track or on the track, and the car has been more than I expected. I'm actually amazed at how well it's held up. Most of my friends have 996's (form cabs to TT's to GT3's) and I'm one of the few that didn't trade up. I have to say that I'm happy with my decision. I do agree that equally preped 996 is faster than a 993, but that's the only definitive statement I can make.

I posted some videos of me at a local DE on the 993 list:
https://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/188938-another-video.html

There are two videos, you just have to scroll down for the second one.

No matter which one you choose, I think you'll wonder what the other would have been like. But that's life.

George

Dunno, but I've seen quite a few 993s going for more some than 996s. I would suspect that you could get a 2000-2001 (the early ones tend to be problematic, I personally would avoid the 99s, particularly the early ones which actually came over in 98) for around the same price as a 96 993 and certainly less that a 97/98 S. I think either way you're looking at around $40k, less if you go with higher milage, in which case I definitely would go 993 as your into 98/99 996s at that point.

Like mentioned above, the 996 is stiffer, faster and a better daily driver ie: more comfy. 993 is more comunicative, though..

In putting an actress to a car, all wide-body 911's = Kirstie Alley

LOL, Thats harsh! I was thinking more like Rene Zellwigger, you do get big brakes and an upgraded suspension with those fender flairs.

I an having a hard time deciding for myself if the 993 is more like Lindsay Lohan, Meriah Carey, Halle Berry or Angelina Jolie. I think I'm going to go with Lindsay. Maybe this site might clear things up:

Oh yeah, it's NWS (not work safe).

Ok if **** stars are optional Jessica Simpson 996 and Nikki Zering 993 and I am married.
That said Jenna Jameson would be a CupCar and Angela Jolie a GT 3 !

$40k?? You don't buy low mileage creampuffs for track cars. He should be able to find a perfectly serviceable 993 for mid-twenties tops.

mid 20's 993? if you find one, you need a lot of money just to freshen it before you even get into the mods. a close friend if mine did that and it's hell expensive. i would always start with a nice car or even a new car, but i am borderline insane.

Many recent article re early 996's becoming less expensive than 993's. Durability is an issue however.
Thanks

Wet Sump vs. Dry Sump.

Without a question - 993.

I don't see the quality in the 996 (or the boxster). I had engine problems with a Boxster S due to the lack of a true dry sump (see other posts..). To be honest, I wouldn't track any of the "new" porsches other than a GT3.

I own both a 993 (track) and 997 (not track) and completely agree with agentpennypacker. The only kicker is the relatively strogf 993 pricing and relatively weak 996 pricing.
Thanks

No question about it Jim, you can a lot to both of this cars.

For me, you can always set 993 more badass than 996 (remmeber, not talking about being faster).

Soundvise, where as you can set-up 996 as Tina Turner singing "rolling on the river", you can set-up 993 as Janis Joplin singing "Piece of my heart".

Lately, I've seen more than a handful of 996s emitting blue oil smoke at track events. I've never seen that with a 993. I'm not sure if that is a dry sump vs wet sump issue or not. I also like the 993 styling better.
