The only way to make a 993 more badass than a 996 is to make it into a 3.8L RS. (Remember Finn, it's all about being faster

The exhaust system on my 996 is an eight inch long piece of 3 inch pipe running directly from the header out the back bumper cover. I'm pretty sure Janis would have approved.
At the end of the day and as I've said many times before, the 996 has a better track chassis and the 993 has a better (although weaker) track engine. If you want the best of both worlds, go buy a GT3. If you can't afford a GT3 and want to go fast, buy a 996. If you want the comfort of a dry sump engine and are willing to finish a close second, buy a 993. It's hard to imagine going wrong here.
FWIW, I've club raced a 996 for two years with zero engine problems. Year one was in a 3.4L, year two a 3.6L. There are many more 996s showing up in C (4 at VIR) so there will be much more data soon.

My plan is actually to put a TT engine in my car (keeping it rwd) when it's time to re-build the engine.
In a way it is being faster but being badass doesn't necessary mean being faster, 917 in GULF colors won't beat 962 on a track but imo is waaaay more badass.

No question but still imo you can get meaner noise from 993, although my favourite is probably 2.2 or 2.7 with open pipes, I guess it's those smaller size cylinders & pistons that make it more special.

As much as we'd hate to admit it, Porsche is moving away from it's heritage. These cars aren't the "track" cars they once were out of the shop. A good driver will destroy a 996/997 out on the track.

Check out the Grand Am Cup series. There's a whole bunch of nearly stock 996s being driven by some pretty good drivers and they seem to be doing just fine.

If you get a 996, I don't see the point of getting one earlier than a 2002. With a chip in your 993 and some other mods, you can get damn near close to the 996 and LOOK a whole lot better
