Default Racer's with Big Wings

For those of you that have big wings on your cars what do you do for a mirror? I was watching the Rolex 24 and saw the cup cars had a very short mirror but it stretches across the whole header. What do you guys do and where can I find one?
TIA

Pinball is a factory RSR with a HUGE rear wing and a stock rear view mirror. When asked how the mirror works, our driver replied, I never use it, no one's fast enough to pass us!

With an extended rear wing, your view is pretty much unencumbered. The wing is so high you can't see it.

But a stock rear-view mirror is not adequate for most track use. Get a fish-eye mirror (at minumim) or a 'wink' style mirror. Sooner or later, everyone will be using head and neck restraints, which means you won't be able to crane your neck around when you back up.

I have an RS3.8 rear wing; don't know if that qualifies as 'big'.

I have the Allview racers mirror:
http://www.allviewmirror.com/racing.htm
http://www.allviewmirror.com/pdf/ram.pdf

It mounts to the rollbar going across the top of the windshield.
I was impressed at the field of view it provides while backing up in and around the paddock. Very happy with the purchase. I was able to see one at a local shop and liked it.
They also make std mount units as well.

Longacre also makes a similar mirror in 14" and 17" widths:

http://www.longacreracing.com/catalo...d=599&catid=21

I liked this style better than the multi segmented mirror units (Wink); personal preference I suppose.

You can buy the Allview and Longacre units from www.cdoc.com; among other places.

I'll second the 17" Longacre. It covers the field from just about the point where peripheral vision takes over. Works well.

The Wink style does not do it for me - too many images to deal with.

If you guys use these big mirros how do you get the OEM mirror off the window without breaking the window?

I have the 17-inch model from I/O Port Racing. It's $20, and it snaps over the existing rear-view mirror, so you don't have to change anything.

The other type attaches to your roll cage, if you have a roll cage.

Thanks for all of the advice

Lewis, I have the same wing so I think I will go for the same mirror. I have a full cage too so I can take the stock mirror (already mounted to roll cage) off and clip that bad boy on.

The 17" Longacre is fairly light. I mounted the Longacre to the stock mirror mount. Removed the stock glass, filled the stock mirror housing with silicon to support the very flexible longacre mirror, and used two bolts to mount the longacre.

Two nice things about this approach:
- The mirror mount is further away from the driver than is possible if it is mounted on the cage. This gives a much better field of view.
- Retains the stock mirror ball adjuster, which makes it easy to set the mirror. It does not move around even under hard race conditions.

You can see the finished fitting in this pic.

fabillybob,

My mirror slides right off the base. It's attached to a slider mount (Factory) and all you need to do is push the base firmly towards the top of the glass. I'm not sure what car you drive but I imagine other p-cars have similar mirrors. And if you film your laps, it's really a huge upgrade.

Cool! I hadn't thought of that. I will test that out at VIR next weekend.

Jack,

You are awesome. Thanks for the tip. I just bought one. This is the best race site I have found for my kind of racing!
