Default UPSIDE DOWN GEARBOX, HUH?

in Bruce Andersons book he makes mention of the 935 cars running an inverted gearbox. How does this work and what does it accomplish?

Johan:

Turning the gearbox upside down gives you much better drive shaft angularity and CV joint range with a car that is VERY VERY low.

One fabricates mounts, a tranny oil pump & cooling system, and some shift linkage changes.

The back seat sheet metal is all removed of course and replaced with custom sheet aluminum secured by dzus fasteners.

Steve,

There seems to be quite a few advantages to flipping the box. Does it not help with reducing the centre of gravity because the engine is now placed much lower to the ground or does the engine remain in its present position. What happens to gearshifting? Is first gear now on the opposite side as to where it was with the box right side up?

If it's a 'trans-axle', the most obvious benefit is that you'll have 4-6 speeds in reverse.

So how did they overcome the 4-6 back and 1 forward gear on the 935s?

The 930 Ring gear gets swapped to the other side of the pinion inside the bellhousing,.......

Shift patterns are the same.

Don' you just love innovative ideas! When I look at drawings of a 915 box it seems as if the engine could be lowered as much as 8 inches. Is this not a major (beneficial) lowering of weight for a track car?

Since we are on the topic. Has anyone figured out a way to flip a G50 tranny?

The hypoid offset of the G50 R&P doesn't allow for a simple ring gear flip. It has been done (for mid-engine kit car use), but at incredible expense. There is a new mid-engine 6-spd sequential transmission presently being designed around the G50 Turbo R&P, but it will be quite expensive.
