Default camcorder recommendation

I'm looking to buy a camcorder for my car. Any particular features I should consider? Brand? Place to buy? Price?

Thanks

Tim,
I went with a Sony. Super reliable and the steady shot works very well. It's mini DV format. If you do a search too you will find some good threads that should help.

Cheers, James

A few things:

You will shorten its lifespan considerably by bolting it to your car and vibrating it like crazy. You can mitigate this by getting a lipstick camera and a microphone, and feeding the signal into the camera, which can be packed in padding.

A lipstick camera also allows you to try different camera positions, either for cool angles, or things like suspension component investigation.

If you can get a camera with a wired start-stop switch, you will not have to record a lot of time waiting to be let out.

If you're going to post clips online, make sure it has a firewire (or similar) port to go to your camera.

The straight-to-DVD models probably won't work in a shaking race car.

I bought a $400 Sony mini DV camcorder and added a $150 3 year warranty.

That's smart. This may be the one instance that it really makes sense to choose to purchase the extended warranty. After about a year of use, my Canon DV had to go in for work, and it came out of my pocket.

Does anyone know if the Canon Elura 65 has input ports that you can attach a lipstick camera to?
And an external microphone for that matter.

I've read a couple of product descriptions but am still not 100% sure. Not sure if someone here has one and could comment on it?

If it has the Canon 1/8-inch media plug, you're good to go.

Don't buy the Sony handycam IP. It records in MicroMV format, which means it's not compatible with almost all of the video editing software that's available, including the stuff that comes with any PC or Mac. Go for a sony DV or a Canon DV, they're both pretty good and you can record straight to DVD with them.
