Safety Devices vs. OG Racing Bolt in Cage
I'd like to know what experiences people have had with these cages? Is one better than the other? Might be going into a 993.
Thanks,

Justin,
Did you ever get a response from Delray on the engine deal? I found my papers at work last week if you need a copy.

I can't comment on the Safety Devices cage, but I am fairly happy with my OG cage (in my 924). Proper design and goes to the sills, unlike so many cheap cages out there. But yes, in future I will be getting custom cages - no more expensive, and even better to meet my needs (rather than a compromised cage designed for a car with full interior, but going into a gutted car).

Nothing like a Safety Device cage or roll bar.Mounting plates weld in, plates on tubes bolt to welded plates.Extreamly good fit and powder coated. Removable side intrusion bars. I have roll bar in my 73 911, Cage in my RS Amer., And bar in GT3.

I have a safety devices cage in my 914, and a OG cage in my 911, they are both good off the shelf cages. Yes a custom installed cage will be better but it will cost a few more bucks.
Either choice will be good.

Alan,
I take it you don't want a custom welded-in cage? Just wanted to make sure you knew about the guy in INDY that does great cage work if you wanted to go that route.

Never had an OG cage, but the Safety Devices cage I had in my SC was very well built and fit well. Make sure you get all the extra bars with the welded on tabs and not the wrap around clamp style for the doors, dash and harness. They sell the tabs seperately as well to add more.
As everyone mentions, a custom built cage is best, but...

Thanks all,
Greg, I know about the guy in Indy and I may still go that route. I just need something to get me through the next couple of events as I am taking the Heigo roll bar out this weekend. There is also a new source in Williamsburg, OH that does custom cages. The guy is a mechanical engineer and he and his brother are making NHRA certified cages for funny cars and top fuel cars. I've seen some of his work and it is impressive.

Alan;
You just need to make sure they have a grasp of the road race environment and what a cage needs to do, mostly in terms of ingress/egress. I've seen cages done by drag and stock car builders, and while they were technically adequate, you could DEFINITELY tell that the builder had no practical road race experience at all.

I've got the safety devices cage in my 968. I like it and from what I've seen, this cage is very popular with the 951/944 drivers. Bought mine through Stable Energies.

John,
Your point is well taken. John Wright's shop has begun using the shop in Williamsburg. John is Larry Schumacher's crew chief. I believe John has communicated to him exactly what he needs to do for the road racing set.

I have a Safety Devices cage in my 964. I was a bit surprised to find that it is not suitable for NASA racing. It lacks a true diagonal on the main roll hoop and the side bars are not welded, only bolted. It will not be too difficult to have modified, but be aware that not all cages pass the specs for all groups.

Tom,
I'm surprised to hear your comment about SD cages and NASA. I had no problems teching within our PRC racing, under the NASA umbrella. I believe I had the only SD caged racer of our bunch; certainly the only 964. They will accept anything that passes PCA CR tech. (And yes it held up fantastically when I did the car in at Sears last year). It was a little sticky to get them to waive their "window net attached only to the cage rule", but I guess Jay and the guys talked some sense into them.
Now if you want to run in the free-for-all of NASA itself, well that's a whole different scenario!
