If you want a potentially annoying project, you can build up your own system using Baofeng radios or another cheaper set. I've had a few people say the Baofeng are actually pretty decent. If you buy the regular Motorola/Kenwood/TYT setup from someone, it's going to just work and you get support. I just bought a setup from Sampson and they were good to work with.
