Default Pigs Flying... MidOhio - Repaving

Just completed 3 sunny dry days at MidOhio with MORPCA, lots of track time and glorious weather seldom seen at MOSCC over 3 days in mid April.

A surprise awaited drivers as we took to the track on Friday, Turn 1 had just been repaved!

In the paddock Garage #1 is closed (maybe permanently), as was Garage #2 (temporary). Mens restroom (adjacent to #1) was also closed. Remodeling the mens restroom (supplies in G2, and they say, possibly expanding mens into G1 possibly) was the explanation. New pavement around Cooper garage and gas pumps too. The stairs leading to Garage blocks viewing balconies have been rebuilt and now open once again in "B" block. Fresh paint and new garage doors are also a sign of maintenance and investment. Gate 3 / rental weekends now using online Speed Waivers (self photo based).

The MO staff shared that in October '23 after the end of the season, the entire tack will be repaved and drainage issues will be addressed! Turn 1 repave is a test of a "special" aggregate mix that if it holds up thru the season, it will be used on the entire track in the fall! It also appears that some drainage issues / repairs are happening in the paddock pavement too.

Next up, maybe pigs will fly...

You mean Mid-O will actually have some grip?

Matt, might be a good time to post up the pic I sent you recently of a certain grocery store in Danville.......

wow... they put money into MO? naaa, can't be.

a repave sounds awesome but i bet i will lose the dip in the carousel... i've conditioned myself to smile if i hit it with the left rear and grunt angrily if i don't it would be nice to get rid of the 4 rivers including the worm expressway coming out of keyhole.

Gotta say I'm a little bummed. I really like the low grip surface.

Rumors for years of a repaving, so a wait and see approach is justified, but the very recent amount of investment in much needed maintenance and repairs since last fall gives hope that maybe this time it will happen. It was interesting that they selected T1 as a test section (ease of access? - high speed IndyCar "grip" / "suction" test? - drainage?) as it also include the pit out lane / blend section, as lots of other corners were / are in much more need of "help".

Wow. Amazing news indeed. I have NEVER in my life been in a gravel trap so fast due to the most miniscule amount of sprinkles/rain. It was like a toggle switch from full grip to ice when there was a tablespoon of total rainfall on my entire car.

Yup, that'd be our beloved Mid-Ohio. I can't begin to imagine what it would be like with grip. Maybe a smaller version of Pitt?

Hah!

Not a chance, been there since the first repave I can remember in 1990. And at least one repave since.

Awesome news. I remember the last repave. Track records dropped like the helicopter thingys maple trees are scattering all over my car this week. They should add some banking to keyhole...lol..can you imagine?

Oh my...

Am signed up for the SCCA Majors there middle of May... would love if they would get to the Carousel by then, but if they're doing the turns in sequence, no chance of that happening!

Signed up for a garage too, we'll see how they look, if improved any... though I'd be happy if they cleaned up the paddock access roads first!!!

Full track repave in Oct, no plans they shared to do more before than regarding paving. Paddock upgrades (like restrooms) I think will continue thru the season. Staging a paving crew for such a big job will be a "one and done" effort ot be cost effective. No word if they plan to repave paddock, but given drainage work happening in paddock, could be a possibility. The paddock was dryer than I would have expected in April (or May, June, July, ...), just fixing garage wall dripping faucets can be a big help. Garages were painted and new doors thru out, but the bee's and existing "fixtures" remain so far.
