Default What grade Redline Racing oil to use on '87 951?

I've decided to go with Redline Racing oil this year just for added safety. It seems the general concensus is that Redline and Amsoil are superior to Mobil 1 for track use and I can get Redline locally rather than ordering it. Thing is Redline's racing oils are specifies as SAE20 rather than the multiviscosity rating like 15W-50 that Mobil 1 uses. So which SAE grade should I be using for a chipped 951.

Thanks,

I think it is their 40 wt racing oil.

It should be equivalent to the 20w50 stuff. Check redline's website for product spec details. I was going to use that or AMSOIL a while back and was looking at them. A friend tried Redline and I Chose AMSOIL 20w50 series 2000 racing.

Skip-

I contacted Redline a while back about an oil for my street/track chipped 86 951. They suggested their new 5w-40. I don't know about a full race oil, but I would just ask them directly. I emailed them and they got back to me pretty quickly.

Alas, I didn't go with Redline, I went with M1 15w-50. I would really like to run the new "Truck and SUV" M1 5w-40 as I think that is the best weight and best for hard driven turbos (it is the same as Delvac 1, their 100k mile diesel commercial truck oil). I can't find it in my area yet.

Don't use the street redline stuff on the track. It is not bad, but no better than Mobil 1. My friend that tried Redline when I tired AMSOIL saw the same pressure drop with Redline Street stuff as Mobil1. I had my pressures stay up with AMSOIL.

Here is a link
Redline Racing oils

It looks like thier 50wt is a 10W50 / 20w50 equivalent

Would you recommend to run racing oil just for DEs and then switch back to street oil? Redline does not recommend their racing oils for the street due to low detergency.

M758,

How often do you change the Amsoil 20W-50?

I used to change my Mobil 1 every 2 event weekends.

Now I will probably push the Amsoil to 3 weekends, but it looks like I have been getting only 2 so far.

I ran two events on my first batch of Amsoil.
That included 4 sprint races and one 2hour endro for about 6 race hours with another 4 hrs practice time. Total of 10 hrs. time
I figured it was time for a change

I have run 4 sprint races and 1 hour enduro on my last change I figure 5 hrs of racing and 3.5 hrs of practice for a total of 8.5 hrs.

I have since parked the car for maintence and have not raced it in while.

M758, do you use Amsoils SDF-36 oil filter as well and/or thier bypass filtration system? I have been using their HP 10w-40 in my daily driver 84' for two years with great results, hence I am going to use their Series 2000 20w-50 in the 83' (street and track duty). The 951 engine was rebuilt only about 1000mi ago and I want to treat it well right from the start. How signs told you that it needed changing? For how much the oil costs I would invest in an Oil Analysis program. Anyone here ever do so?

Take Care All!

I just use a standard Mahle oil filter. The reason I went with AMSOIL was not for extended oil drail intervals, but for it ability to maintian oil pressure under racing conditions in a attempt to provide one more level of protection for my rod bearings over Moblil 1. It costs about twice as much as mobil 1, but if I can prevent a rod bearing failure I have earned my money's worth from it.

I changed the oil frequenty with Mobil 1 because I knew I was runnign high oil temps. Although I don't have an oil temp gauge I knew this due to the oil pressure drop. I wanted to change it quite often since the more heat and strain is put on the oil the more its protective properties degrade. Therefore I used short invervals to change the oil. In most cases the oil looked as clean and clear as new oil, but I did not want to take the risk.

Switching to Amsoil I also will change the oil frequently, however due to cost I will try to get more life from the it than I did with mobil 1. I figure that if I changed Mobil 1 after every 2 race weekends then changing Amsoil after every 4 event weekends will me a similar cost to me since Amsoil is about twice as expensive as Mobil 1.

I have not yet achieved the 4 weekend oil change schedule most since my first outings with Amsoil were pretty intense weekends and now I it is time for the car's scheduled maintence anyway.

Remember that race cars see a very tough enviroment. In my spec car I am putzing allong when I am running 3500 rpm. All shifts are 6000-6200 RPM and I never want to go below 4000 with alot of WOT. In my street cars I rarely see 4000 and almost never WOT.

So their oil sees a much easier time. I could do oil analysis, but don't want to be botherd. If I can feel confident in running 3-4 weekends on an oil change I will be very happy.

Over the last 2 years, I have used Red Line 20-50 street oil and Mobil1 15-50 in my 944 turbo race car (stock class). I recently contacted Red Line and they suggested using their 40wt race oil, which I am using now. I get the same oil pressure as when I used their 20-50 street oil and about one bar better than when I used Mobil 1. I tried Mobil1 because of its availability, but didn't like the pressure drop.

FWIW - attached is the response I got back from Redline:

Skip,

If your 944 is trailered to the track one of the Red Line Race oils
could be used, the 40W or 30W Race would be suitable. I would prefer
the 30W Race for competitive racing with your car, assuming the
clearances on rod and main bearings are close to stock. The Race Oils
are a broad viscosity but don't contain the detergents and additives
necessary for longer drain intervals or street use, the 30W Race is a
10W30 viscosity.

If the car is driven on the street as well as on the track, I would
recommend the motor oils, the 10W40 or 10W30 would be reasonable
viscosities.
