Default VIR Adds Front Straight Guardrail

Now you have something to hit. Three panels high with three FIA breaks.

This doesn't show the complete Armco from pit exit all the way around the interior of T1 and up to T3...

Those trees are quite lovely, I saw them up close on a damp day.

Maybe, it's for you!

Seriously, when it's wet or cold, cars can slide down towards the Dan River (top of the picture, behind the tree line) a long, long way.

Seems like it would be.a non issue for a minor off and a big help for a major one.

I think Kerrigan Smith and his crew at VIR have always been 110% committed to circuit safety and been laser-beam focused on improving that where they can.

One of the first achievements of Smith's administration was to invite Charlie Whiting and petition for FIA Grade 2 certification. VIR has continually improved and followed best practices to maintain and enhance that rating.

It's still a LOT safer, in my mind (more forgiving of mistakes), than Road Atlanta or The Glen... No judgment, just assessing risk exposure for a mistake.

I did two AER races at VIR this past summer and I have to tell you I couldn't tell you what it looks like to the left as my eyes were never there! Glad there is something between us and the distant trees.

Buddy of mine had an incident coming onto the front straight when a car spun in front of him. The hit ruptured the front left brake line, spun him around and he went off track left backwards with no brakes. He went so far into the trees it took several minutes before corner workers and safety realized where he was - they apparently thought he was able to go into the pits as they could not see him in the trees. Luckily he was fine but those extra minutes could have been a big deal had he been injured. In my opinion, this is a good safety addition to the track.

What do you think is unsafe at Road Atlanta? 1,3,12?

Def MUCH more forgiving that Watkins. VIR has tons of runoff in a lot of key places. The Glen does not....

That being said, I don't think I've ever gone off (full 4 off) at VIR, yet the first time I went off at Watkins, I totaled the car. Not very forgiving at all....
