944 Cup: C'mon PCA
#16
Also, thinking of boycotting the Glen, or at least reducing to just sprints. I don't like the photos in question, but the Director is a good one, who has actually treated women competitors fairly and done a lot for PCA racing, and free speech on your own site is free speech.
P.S. He allowed me to receive my trophy from a trophy guy when I was on the podium back in the days of NASA.

944s have trophy girls and Cup cars have none. This sounds like some Bernie Sanders BS to me!

As an old-timer back in the early days of cup/supercup (2004-ish), I think they grid girls started while we were doing most of our racing (at least on the east coast) in NASA Mid-Atlantic, and Nasa would have trophy "models" walking through the paddock at Hyperfest each year handing out blow pops and then handing out the trophies for pictures with the drivers at the presentation. Cup/Supercup wasn't tied (at that point) to a particular race organization as even though we would do 90% of the races with Nasa Mid Atlantic, we would also run with SCCA, some vintage clubs, so the director was able to negotiate the split starts because he brought a "turnkey" race series and a dozen cars to the show and we'd often get our own run group! The the girls (IMO) were just a tradition that grew out of Hyperfests past. Thought to be fair, Saturday night Hyperfest trophy festivals at Summit in those days included a wet Tshirt contest (IIRC) that featured the trophy girls and some local "professional entertainers".... :-) Ahh, the good ole days
As to split starts, I just ran with NASA MA in my SPB car (Super cup long ago sold) running ST5 the other weekend at Summit and they did SIX SPLIT STARTS for each of the Lighting race groups (Spec E30, Spec 3, GTS1-2, Super Touring and the like) which included
- 5 separate STANDING starts. First race group in line pulls up to a start cone on the main straight. Flag drops and they go. Next group immediately rolls to cone. Once they stop, flag is dropped. About 5 seconds after the first flag, and so un until group 5 who went just as the E30s came up just after pace car rolled into pits.
Was perfectly timed by the Nasa start crew, and traffic separation was great - only ended up getting caught in a lapper's battle twice in 45 minutes.

John - correct. I would reach out to Dave Deracola - series director. I believe his handle is 944cup (or 44cup) on this board. At the Potomac club race last year I believe there were at least 25 cars that run in those classes. Also there is an active 944 cup section of this forum - https://rennlist.com/forums/944-cup-spec944-253/

Checked NOLA race entry on Club Registration and 12 SP 1,2&3 cars are entered. Apparently PCA is continuing with these classes, just not under the 944 Cup Banner.

Well, those race signups were before the disagreement happened. We will see what happens going forward. One of the great perks of the 944Cup series was all the sponsors and the awesome end of year championship race and awards dinner. That is no longer happening. I only know part of the story so I am not judging yet, but it is certainly disappointing.

There was an email today announcing he's resigned from his position with PCA Club Racing.
"To our SP1, SP2 and SP3 Racers:
After many years of service, the 944 Cup founder, Dave Derecola, has resigned from his position with PCA Club Racing. We would like to thank Dave for the vision and energy he has provided through the years in growing these great racing classes.
PCA Club Racing will continue the tradition of supporting and growing the SP classes. We are happy to report that all scheduled races will be held as planned and are working diligently to bring new and exciting features to the program.
We look forward to seeing you at future events!
