Default dunlop race slicks

I am thinking of moving up to the Dunlop race slick tyres from Hoosiers. I am limited to the dunlops becuase I am running 17" wheels. Some people have said the slicks are 2-3 seconds faster per lap. I hope so... for the extra $$$. I also have no experience with tire pressures for slicks...ANy recommendations or thoughts

Thanks

Bill

Pirelli's are around 23-25 cold 30-31 hot, dunlops are about the same.

Have you found a good source for the Dunlops?

I bet you will be faster in the Hoosiers than the Dunlop slicks. They require a much more aggressive alignment (at least 4 degrees negative) and they are not nearly as durable. The Dunlops are not very high on the totum pole of slicks. The Pirelli's, Michelins, Yoks are all "better". Grand Am runs the Dunlop slicks as it is their spec tire, not because it is fastest.

If you are just doing DE's you are throwing money away (IMO).

Greg

If we are talking about the Dunlop crossply slicks you are quite correct. When it comes to radials (Avons) I agree they are MUCH better but in our neck of the woods at least twice the price.

The crossply Dunlop slicks are imported from Japan and the Avons from France.

I run Dunlop slicks and set cold pressure at 20-20 lbs. You want the tires to be at 28lbs hot. As to the quality, I prefer them to the yokes for tread life and grip.

Lawson,

Did you run the Hoosier RS303 tires, and if so how do they compare to the Dunlops. My 17" wheels limit me to the Dunlops only, but everyone says the true (non DOT) slicks are faster than the Hoosiers.... Are they?

I am running -3.2 camber in the font and -2.0 in the rear (max setting in the rear) how does that compare with your set up, I am running a 944turbo that is 2375lbs....

Thanks For the air pressure info....

I am just getting ready to try my Yoko slicks at the track next week. I got a little harder compund for better wear. Also, they have some cool sizes for a 993TT - 250/650-18s and 320/650-18s. These really measure mor like 265s and 335s.. I can't wait.. They also turned out to be about the same price as 17" Hoosiers...

From the Dunlop Motorsport 2004 GT Tyre Information booklet ...

The following are MINIMUM running inflation pressures for slicks:

a) Flat Tracks

Class Hot PSI Cold PSI
GT 31 22
GTS 30 20
LMP675 28 22
LMP900 28 19

b) Banked Tracks

Class Hot PSI Cold PSI
GT 35 25
GTS 34 24
LMP675 34 24
LMP900 32 22

It would seem that some of you are running your pressures a little too low.

Karl S

Living and racing at an altitude of 5500 ft invariable I have to ask: Do these figures allow for altitude? We seem to run 5 - 6 lb less pressure.

A true racing slick will give you better grip than a Dot R tire like a Hossier. I used to run Hossiers on a DE car and now run the Dulops on a 993 cup so it is not apples to apples but seat of the pants tells me that I get more grip with the slick. As to tread life, I use a new set of Dulops to qualify and then do a sprint race (40-45 minutes). I will then use that same set for test and tune and or practice at the next race and put on a new set for the race.

I have found that with my car the lower pressures seem to work better 20-22lbs cold. My car weighs 2,500 lbs.
