Default Best 3D Camera?

I have front and rear facing cameras tied to my AIM system but was thinking about adding a 3D camera. My current camera setup doesn't capture me driving the car and in certain circumstances I think it would be good to review.

What are people using these days? I see GoPro has a new 3D camera coming out in a few days.

Ive seen 360fly and gopro fusion...both do a pretty good job.

The big issue besides price is file size and computer needs to edit etc.

Big issue is the view out of the car....aka 20ft away becomes backgroud in my opinion

I use my VBox Hd2 and can position the camer to get a basic 360deg fov with 2 cameras.....rear facing camera gets myself and actually covers the passenger side of the car well... isnt the best but is good enough for what we need, what im doing is more important to me....steering angle etc.

Excuse the crappy arrows highligting the cars show on camera.

^^ I like the MXL2 with the VBox logo.

I've avoided 360 cameras. My data files can end up 100 MB, video a few GB, then a huge 360 video file gets old storing it, editing, etc. I'd look at the AER forums and see what those guys are running. A few of them use 360 cameras and I want to say I've seen one streamed, but I could be wrong on the streaming.

Actually this is helpful - maybe what I want is a camera pointed at me instead.

The 360 cameras are cool for goofing around but I am frustrated because with my current camera I can't see what I am doing.

360Fly is the way to go but I don't use it anymore as it is too cumbersome to download files.

I read that as well. About 1/3 of their reviews on Amazon are 1 stars.

The new GoPro Max is going to be the best you're going to get. It is going to be released the end of this month. They streamlined a lot of the process to attempt to make it less cumbersome. It only uses 1 SD card now where the old one wrote to 2 SD cards. Also stitches the file and processes it IN camera vs in post production. Nice tiny formfactor too. I have the last gen GoPro Fusion and i've used it a few times on track. Here's a quick 360/4k vid with data I made below, click to view as 360 vids cant be embedded here. Be sure to check out on phone too!

Luigi, if you want to film yourself you can find some good examples on PornHub by going to the "POV" section.

Hey, AIM doesn’t have synced video and VBOX doesn’t have a full featured dash! Best of both worlds!

The VBOX has had interoperability with AiM through their tie-up with Radical for about eighteen months. They now have an official tie-up with MoTeC, so much so that the VBOX can use the MoTeC GPS antenna for their info and can be imported into i2 Standard automatically.

The 360Fly seems to be the most popular, the streaming works ok, AFAIK. A fair number have come and gone in the last two years.

I agree with this. With the SmartyCam moved back to the main hoop plane, lens at eye level, right of centerline about 6-8,” you could see you and perhaps the rear view mirror view as well.

That is my set up. My hands on steering wheel are visible. If you need a selfie, than a camera focusing on your face is appropriate.

Coach, your comment is sticking with me. Do you mean AIM doesn't have synced video as in lap vs lap or video synced with data ??

I picked up an AIM Solo DL and am waiting to select the proper camera. Looks like a SmartycamHD wide angle might suffice to get some drive movement if mounted correctly.

The AiM SmartyCam is a great, automated solution that yields a video with car information (speed, G’s, lap times, lap count, track map and car info, If the logger gets it) in about twenty seconds after you return to the pits. You can then watch the instrumented video. That’s it. The wide angle view (84 FOV, be glad to make you a RL deal) is terrific for capturing a drivers head and hands, as well as outside the car.

Nope, never have been able to open AiM video auto-synced within the AiM Race Studio Analysis data analysis window, at least not without jumping though the hoops of a third party software like TrackAttack. Big PITA, for me at the track.

You can compare side by side video-only with work using CompareMyLaps, but that is imperfect, too. Just finished a few days working with that.

I don’t have enough time to assemble all the moving parts at the track in order to provide professional evaluation and analysis between sessions. And if I don’t, others don’t either.

AiM says this is coming in the software, but we’ve been waiting a long time. Nice hardware, though.
