It took me a while but I should have asked people:
1) Which cars do you drive
2) How fast are you? Drive a slow car fast or a fast car fast
3) Which groups do you drive with and which group (open passing, etc.). Car specific clubs (alfa romeo, PCA, Porsche owners club, audi, lotus, etc. are known as having newbies and not the fastest people around)
4) Since many seem to be instructors - perhaps they are instructing/coaching in lower level groups and making conclusions based on their students (who are newbies)
5) Seems that people seem to be protecting something (ie; newer people to tracking might not want to track now; insurance coverage may be at risk)
Many of the same posters just seem to be agreeing with each other and thinking that it somehow validates their opinions.
And yeah; many people would curtail their driving if they didn't have track insurance (they aren't going to ride someone's bumper into and out of a turn to try to pass them if they don't have track insurance, they aren't going to try to make a late pass before a turn, and they aren't going to try to go 80 mph through turns such as turn 4, 6 and 9 at Laguna Seca.

I caught it. I'm just very serious about this topic...

My answers for 1 - 5 are "I drive flat out".
