The ones you noted are what everyone uses. We sell Scribner jugs. And yes, they say "not for fuel transportation"...because of this law. But its what everyone uses. This is what we sell, and we personally have 5 for fuel transport...as do most track people:

These are my preference. I have one 10 year old Scribner Plastics brand jug and a 1 year old VP racing jug. The VP jug often leaks around the threads on the cap. Only when I crank it down so tight that I can't get it back off does it ever actually seal. But then it leaks fuel out the air inlet opening instead. My Scribner jug seals very well, and has replacement seals available if they get old and crack. The air vent seldom ever has fuel leaking out of it. My VP jug has been relegated to lawn equipment duty. The Scribner jug goes with me to the track.

Ok - Scribner it shall be. Just ordered a couple from Naro Escape - thanks again! Got the fill tubes as well. Appreciate it - my thirsty Miata appreciates it as well.

BUT...before you invest see what the enduro guys are using. The enduro guys use the square VP looking jugs and then modify them for a vent line. This way during refueling the jug acts more like a dumpcan and fires the fuel in quicker. I don't know anything about it being a sprint racer. But if you ever think you might do enduros you may as well buy a jug that can double duty. So maybe more research is needed?

Not sure if cross-posting like this is allowed, but I found a good reference to that mod.

Boat PVC bulkhead fittings in the cap for 1" hose, and a 90 out the side for the vent. The ball valve & hose is from Lowes. You can flip the can up with your right hand, and spin the ballvalve to vent the can and let gravity to the rest. I think we are around 20sec per 5gal.

No sealent, though I do have one of my 90's on the vent leaking a little bit.

Here in SoCal, I can purchase "fresh organic" 5 gallon sealed containers of SUNOCO 105 unleaded fuel from my local SUNOCO distributor.
I use one of the empties for 10 qt. oil change at later time.

Is it illegal to transport gasoline without a license?

Is it illegal to transport gasoline across state lines?

I've come across weight limits (440#) and liquid limits (110gal) in no more than 8 gallons containers.

I have yet to find a state by state or federal summary.

ymmv,

Mike

I figured there was some limit before the coppers start hassling you. If those are the numbers I'm nowhere close to that.

I don't know about gasoline but one time my buddy and I made a bet with some other guys to deliver some coors from Texarkana to Atlanta.

I have some VP jugs and some Hunsaker jugs, The Hunsaker are great ergonomically BUT they are too tall to fit under most tonneau covers on pickup trucks. If you're shopping for jugs, invest in a nice hose that ties in with the jug cap with appropriate length so that it's good on your back when you pour.

Now, as mentioned above,....all the CARB compliant fuel jugs like the ones that I have for my power equipment at home are impossible to dispense fuel without spilling a whole bunch! I would spill way less simply removing a cap and free pouring it into my lawnmower or snowblower!

Old Ironsides.

Once the floor jack broke loose and rolled across the van into Old Ironsides. Barely put a dent in her!

Remember, if you ever come to N.J., it has to be a red can, by state law. I kid you not. And every gas station, even at the track, has an attendant, so they really won't pump gas for you. Yes, we're the state where some legislator wants to tax tap water.

Just one more reason to avoid Jersey :-)

When I was running an E85 car in ChumpCar -- we had 2x55 gallon containers we filled and took to the track with us.
We only filled them at a station that was as close to the track as we could -- but sometimes that was still 60+ miles away.
Never had any issues, but not sure I'd chance it crossing state lines.

We did however have the best smelling car in the pits!

Mike

We transported a 50 gallon drum of race fuel from Newfoundland, Canada to Charlotte...

Getting across the border was....interesting....
