Question Why so Heavy GTC ???

Just read the R & T review on the GTC and I am puzzeled.

Carbon fiber, PCCB, & exotic metals all over and this Super car weighs in at over 3500 lbs.??? Why?

300 lbs. more than the Enzo. If my 14 year old all steel 964 Cab Tip is only 3100 lbs., how heavy can the sound system in this Porsche be???

Everything is getting more pounds these days (including me) but I can kinda understand a 3900 lb. Audi A 6 that carries 5 folks and a big Dog, with side air bags, 4 cup holders, etc. Even the VW R32 tested in the same issue of R & T is "only" 3300 lbs. with AWD? So can you Engineer types explain?

OK guys - your info says 3000 lbs. I just reported what Road & Track said and since they tested a production car I assume they really weighed it & reported a test wt of over 3700 lbs. Excellence said 3032 as reported by Porsche, and European Car mag says 3175.... so ?

I guess my question now is "how heavy is it really" and then add my original ? Even at 3100 lbs. it is only a few lbs. less than a GT2. With all that has been written about the Hi-tech materials used in the GTC I just assumed it would be less that 1.5 tons. Don't get me wrong it is a Super Car of the highest level, a great Porsche. I just wondered if this was all US Crash & Crush stuff added in?

An article I read (don't remember where, sorry) mentioned part of the weight has to do with the amount of body filler they put on the car to give a nice finish over the top of the CF. They also mentioned the 3 radiators they put in the thing to guarantee it will never over heat.

The numbers you reffer to seems high, but ...

... a wild guess is that the 5.7 ltr V 10 engine weighs a bit more than the GT2:s six or the WV R32 six. The CGT also has a beefier break system - a LOT beafier compared to the Golf, which of course will add weight. And I was under the impression that the Enzo actually was heavier than the CGT? Also consider that there is always a lot of confusion regarding the weight of a car as there are a few different ways to describe weights. Many times apples are compared to oranges.

cheers

The enzo has an aluminum rear sub frame so it would be rebuildible in a rear end collision situation.... the GT does not.

I stand corrected!

Update on Road & Track's numbers. In the latest issue - July - which compares the Three "Crown Jewels" of Automobiles, They state the weight of the CGT is 3190 lb - compared to the Enso @3240 - and the M-B SLR McLaren @ an estimated 3735. They state these as "Curb weight". In the June issue they stated the "est" curb wt of the CGT as 3530, yet this was suposidly a full road test?

So 3190 lb is light fo todays Super Cars? I have to believe it's the Sound System - you know .... the Heavy Base tones.

the optional (no cost though) a/c and radio is responsible for at least 100 lbs of that. if they'd stripped it out inside ala the enzo... but wait, they didn't have to in order to come in underweight. love that leather!

600+ horsepower.

It takes a little more structure than a VW R32 has to control that much horsepower.

True, it is beefy, but the ceramics make up for it. I lifted a PCCB rotor up yesterday, and it felt more like a pizza box than a brake rotor.

Funny you say that. I have been trying forever to find words to appropriately describe how my GT2 brakes feel and you said it. It's like braking with pizza boxes (:

i was inclined to think so myself, until i read the new issue of R&T with "The Crown Jewels" article someone already mentioned. the CGT motor weighs only 282 lbs believe it or not.

i'm new here by the way...hello everyone
