I’m about to have a major service done on my CGT and the quote includes 4 units of manual transmission fluid @ $1086.44 ea for a total of $4345.76. What is that stuff made of? Unicorn blood?
There's nothing special about this. And it's not like our transmission will disintegrate if we put in a different oil of the same grade.
I'd be hard pressed to think the Mobil Delvac product we put into 996/997 GT3 street cars (and which remain in competition service with all Carrera Cups in the 991) aren't at least as good as the period offering in terms of additives.
My wrench would know better than to bill $4k for gear oil when mine goes to service. I'd promise him a Pacino / Scarface moment...
Here’s the quote from Suncoast. Also checked other dealers online—cheapest I found was $925 per unit. So my thoughts were exactly what all of you posted—is there an appropriate substitute? Service bill will be $23K with this fluid—$19K and change would be a nice alternative. The car deserves OEM parts of course, but transmission fluid seems to be something that reputable companies can source at comparable, if not better, quality/performance metrics.
It looks like you must have been quoted for a quantity of 4 - 20 Liter containers of the fluid.
The proper part number is:
000.043.305.49
Priced around $35 a liter online and here at the dealer we charge $45. A drain and fill procedure during a service only requires 3 Liters, only reason more would be needed is if you were draining the transmission oil cooler and lines separately.
Also, there is no replaceable transmission filter

This part is a rigid steel coarse strainer that only requires to be removed and cleaned. If this filter is damaged or needs to be replaced for any reason, you have far bigger problems. The engine oil system has the same strainer pre oil filter
