Bump

Car is at Wright Motorsports in Cincinnati, OH. Probably one of lowest hour 991 cups available. Flesh wound from Atlanta has been repaired. I knew the original post was going to haunt me!

How do the running costs of your 991 compare to your 997.2 you ran last year?

Brake pads wear much better ..no uneven wear like the 997s ..! Disc are much better which also means less new sets along with less new pads

Gearbox much better ..all boxes opened this year at say 20hrs showed no problems at all ..with 997 the boxes had more problems and needed more money spent on them for the same hrs

The engine less stressed so can't over rev leaving to big repair bills ..early days but I think the engine will run easily another 20-40hrs before rebuild compared to 3.8 997 because less revs on down shift ...clearly it depends on what your doing with car

Tyres a outtake more clearly ..! But in talking to my team and my experience apart from tyres they recon cheaper than 997s to run ..front discs are only 300 Pounds

Not much in it but the cars are holding up better from new ..but defo we early days so we need to see the gearbox bills coming in maybe early to mid next next year to get true idea of gearbox service costs

This is the cost of running a 991 gearbox.

$25-35K every 30 hours ,then every 60 hours add an additional $15-20K

It appears that the 991 shell is not as robust as the 997, with relatively light hits requiring shell replacement. Carrera Cup competitors are replacing shocks frequently due to shocks bending.

The 991 Cup chassis partly glued together and requires a new type of body work expertise.
For that reason, indeed, lots of re-shell instead of traditional hammering, pulling and welding.

Curious about the shocks ? why would these bend more then 997 ?

We replaced the shift compressors on the time interval recommended by Porsche in all 3 of our cars. We only bent shocks at COTA when we hit the apex turtles. Otherwise no shock issues all season.

I am hearing that the 2015 car will come with different shocks and a different shift compressor.

I agree with Karlleonard on his comments. The 991 is a much better race car than the 997. I like this car way better than the 997.

I generally agree with Karl, with brake life vastly enhanced on the 991. Shift compressors are being upgraded in 15 and there may be new dampers.

The downside, as Q&A mentioned, is the 991 is considerably more fragile and intricate to repair. There have been several incidents where a 997 would be repaired in two hours at the track and a 991 required a new tub. Sadly, I know this from personal experience.

I personally think the 997 is more involving and rewarding to drive, but that is a whole different debate.

On balance, I would say running costs are pretty similar.

Thanks. It's going to be hyper competitive. Never been on Michelins and haven't been in a 991 since June, so I'll have to figure it out very quickly.

Meanwhile, I'll pray for rain !
