Default 2009 Cup ABS

Hey guys - I'm about to take delivery of an 09 Cup. Was chatting with a few guys at the track over the weekend and many of them with 997 cups have installed ABS. I'd like to have it as well. Does anyone have experience with adding it to a 997 Cup? If so what have you used - Bosch, ATe, 996 Cup ABS etc.

Thanks

Is this Craig?

I had a Bosch MS4 unit in the car. I can tell you all about it. Fabulous unit. Adjustable from the cockpit with 12 settings. You could also still balance front to rear with factory balance settings. I paid $14,000 for it so did not include it with the car. We installed it to be easily removed with a separate harness. Send me an email.

GMG adds them to their World Challenge cars. I believe they use the Tevis system.

I have a new Tevis unit on my 2010. It works very well, I also believe it has multiple modes (not cockpit adjustable and have not played with changing the settings from default).

I believe this would make the car "illegal" for PCA C4, Pirelli Cup and SCCA GT2 class racing as they require the car to be "as delivered". Just a thought if you plan to race in these groups. Would be a huge advantage and nice feature otherwise.

I'd suggest you drive it a bit and see what you plan to do with it. The Cup brakes (non ABS) are amazing, but do require some seat time to get to the limits. I'd suspect much less seat time with ABS. I find it pretty hard to lock it up.

I also added the Motec SLM (light bar module) and have it programed to show individual wheel lock (neg G and wheel speed delta > 30%) and that helps to learn. I also set the lights to progress across to indicate full (all blue) and maximum brake pressure (all purple). The data values can be obtained from your car and driving looking at Motec data. I think max was 850-900 psi for me, from memory. This is traction dependent but helps. If I don't see all purple at a hard brake zone I've left time on the table.

BTW the SLM is very cool and mine is set up to show revs to redline/shift points as well as flash vs solid red for master warning. I had a hard time seeing the dash lights (6'5" tall) and the SLM is mounted on the dash for good view.

Enjoy the car it's amazing but hide the checkbook!

Lastly if you are new to Cups it really pays to get some good help with the data and mechanical track support for the first few weekends. Learning curve is steep and this really helps reduce expensive errors.

cheers,
Kevin

Have the M4 in the 2011 and the '6 Cup-System in the 2008 Cup. Both work great and both will help you to keep your tires in a good shape while pushing to the limits for the first times...

M4 seems to be expensive but it's still cheaper then the bill you have to pay after hitting sth. while sliding with locked-up wheels across the track! It's worth it!

The 6 Cup system will work in your 997. I've installed them in a variety of cars from a 964 to a BMW e30 M3.

Thanks for all the advise gents. I'm going to run it for a while without ABS - do a few SCCA races stock and learn the limits, then install the ABS. I will primarily race with POC so I will need it if I have any chance at being competitive with Geoff and the rest of the field

´6 Cup-ABS will definetely work in the ´7 Cup!

Hard to find them used... And they aren´t available new anymore... Can´t tell sth. about the price because Uwe installed it already in the car for running in the VLN in 2009. P4 overall @ Nürburgring 24h should be a good proof for the system in the ´7!

Opposite experience here. $25K of damage when a 996 cup tire delaminated, due to ABS not allowing me to lock up and keep the car on track. And 997 cup brakes allowed me to miss a car that spun right into my path at a braking point. I don't want ABS in my race car.
