Yes, question is they've already said this is the end of the Mezger engine, (basis for the original 911 thru 997gt3,Cup,RSR and i think Spyder, dry sump engine) and an "integrated" dry sump aka M96/97 (really a wet sump scavenge type design). I know 991 will be all new but given Porsches evolutionary engineering trends it appears that they are moving to a single engine platform rather than the split between the two. I'm just hoping it's not to the detriment of the race motors...

I don´t think that they´ll use the Mezger in the 991 again... I bet 5$ that it´ll be the ultimate proof for the 9A1 before it goes into production for the GT3!

Bad news for the teams then... our design's so outgunned by the competition's V8s by now and there's an urgent need to rethink...

It's already restricted, if Porsche made a more powerful engine it would just be restricted further. if the current engine is reliable, best to keep it. But it's too expensive and does not last long enough when compared to the competition.

Porsche has slid into the trap of developing two separate engine platforms, one for street (M96/97/991) and race (merzger) Porsche always rolled the development of the racecars into the street cars so the sunk cost of racing was a productive effort for the company, plus you got a much better street car. We seem to be on the path for the true racecars not having the impetus for big development efforts, and a consumer car getting the attention. Sounds like porsche/Audi of old, except now the cars share the same shell...

I doubt they will be doing any more development on the metzger engine. The 9A1 version will be in the 2014 cars. It doesn't matter for the teams in super cup since they all have the same thing. The RSR will be faster with the new chassis even with the "old" engine. Like was stated before, the old engine made more than enough power. Power wasn't the issue. The steel chassis, strut front suspension and poor weight distribution was the problem when compared to the other cars.
