Default 996 gearbox and diff

making my list of winter maintenance. My gearbox was last opened about 40 hrs ago. Is this something that should be opened up at this point or will it go another season? Diff was last checked for wear about 20 hours ago has not been changed for at least 60 hours. What is the recommended maintenance interval?

Thanks

Change the gearbox oil, check for metal. Most guys are using high end synthetic that I am sure someone here will recommend. The 2-3 syncros usually go first as a tell tail sign of normal wear. I think that PMNA would tell you 45hrs for a full rebuil, if I remember right but blip, shift smoothly and it should last another season.

Thanks for the info. I was told today by Brian Copan that he suggested between 40-50 hrs depending upon driver so we are probebly getting close.

When the 2-3 syncros start to go how will i know that? I did change the tranny oil about 10 hrs ago and no metal at this point.

Thanks.

Get it done now.... If the 2-3 syncros start to go, you will feel the syncro teeth hitting a bit as you shift down into second or up into third.. IE "a little crunchy"... BUT that is too late.. it will cost a bunch more money as you will have to replace the sliders and syncro teeth/gears...

Dont be penny wise and pound foolish...

You are probably right; sometimes just need the nudge.

Thanks Rick.

What ratio 3rd gear? If it's shorter than the stock 1.56 3rd gear throw it in the bin and get a brand new one. Even if it's the stock one, consider replacing it. People need to time those gears just like they time their motors.

There are many factors involved, and going into the trans with a pointed agenda will lead to a frustrating service life with things wearing out on very different time basis..

If you would like to discuss, feel free to give me a call or send PM..

Happy Holidays..!!

When you say diff checked 20 hours ago but not changed for 60 do you mean the LSD or the ring and pinion set. 60 hours on one of those 4.0 ring and pinion set is a lifetime and a half. You're going to want to replace that outright if it's got 60 hours on it.

If the LSD has 20 hours since the clutches were last done, I would inspect them and see. Don't mess about with the break test for ft/lbs on it as a test of wear unless you know what it was when it was brand new and how it was configured when it was last rebuilt. Could have been 140ft/lb new or could have been 75ft/lb depending on who tuned it and what parts they used.

I realize I"m not answering your $$$ question, but I think we kind of already established there is no "average" for such a thing. But budget for $5000 on the low end and upwards of $10k if it needs a lot.

Yes, LSD was last checked and torqued about 60 hrs ago. Ring and pinion and 1/3/5 gears and several syncros replaced about 40 hrs ago. I think total cost of that rebuild was 3500 or so.

Appreciate the input. It is scheduled for a rebuid.

Thanks.

$3500? the sum of the parts alone would double that.....

Anyway, thanks for the help.
