Question slicks tire selection - Michelin vs Yoko vs Hoosier etc

It's time for me to select next sets of slicks for my Cup car. I am trying to decide to stay with Yokohama or move on to Michelin ... or even Hoosier to save couple bucks. My Yokohama is good for about 4-5 heat cycle then it start to slide. People's feedback on the forum seems to indicate that Hoosier can hold it's own for about 6 heat cycles. I was told by many that Michelin slicks can last alot longer and some times >10 heat cycles or the whole race weekend. For a money factor stand point Michelin win out right:

Michelin $2100/10 HC = $210 per heat cycle
Yoko and Hoosier $1700/6 HC = $283 per heat cycle

I am running about 5 seonds slower at this point compare with a pro. What do you think will be a good practice slicks for the next couple months?

Cheers

Mike

I'd get take-off scrubs from any of the Porsche shops/teams (michelin/yoko/pirelli). I bought 3 sets of Yokos and 2 sets of rains from JWE earlier this year for almost nothing. Really cheap and great to learn on. They'll be about 1-1.5 sec slower than stickers, but while you're learning it doesn't matter.

I'm in the same boat, when all my patron slicks are done (by the end of 2011).. I will be switching to hoosier slicks... from what i have talked to those that are using the HOHO's the last about 12 HC.

If you have those yoke's with 5 HC on them, bring them to laguna for the POC event and donate them to my tire budget.. I can use them for friday practice's

My yoko are all pretty much dead with flat spots all over the place. It will shake your teeth loose lol

Are you going to be at LS end of this month or 9/9 - 9/11 with me and the Bay Area crew?

That is what I gather. Michelin is more expensive up front but last much longer

The new Hoosiers are pretty fast... faster than Michelins in braking and slow turns, ask Pat Kelly, one of the fastest cup drivers. VIR video :

Which Hoosier are you running. R80 or R100. Can only find the R100 for the rears. Sizes?

Best combo for 996/997 is R80 front & R100 Rear

(Just ask for the cup specs in 18")

Yes those were the normal R80/R100 Hoosiers for GT3 cup, the front is bigger than the Michelins so they brake better and I think they are better in slow and medium speed (3rd gear) corners.

This year we used Hoosier R100, Michelin N1 and Yokohama...
Yokohama seem to be the toughest(the most hard-wearing) and the price is cheaper than Michelin !
But it is difficult and even impossible to have them here in Canada...
