Default SCCA class for 2009 GT3 Cup?

Looking over the GCR it's only mentioned in the GT1 class, with Trans-Am cars.... does anyone know if there's another SCCA class the 997 Cups can run in?

I was planning to do a few regional races over the next 2 months to get a SCCA National license and trying to figure out if I should run my 996 WC in STO or the 997 in GT1.. as those seem to be the only options. I supposed I could rent a miata or something as well, but the straights are soooooo long.....

I know the 996 cups are very competitive in GT2. AnalogMike will know.

The stock 997 does still run in GT1 with 700HP trans am cars.

I tried to get it into GT2 with ballast but they wouldn't go for it.

I also asked for allowing any mods on a 997 cup in GT1 (Grand Am specs) and they didn't really answer my question, they said it was in GT1. Maybe I will enter my "Cup S/Grand-Am spec" in GT1 and see what happens.

Hmm.. maybe I'll just run the 09 in STO? It won't have all the permitted modifications (leaving it stock so I can run in Pirelli/Patron), but it'll probably be more competitive than in GT1.

THere is a class in SCCA for World Challenge GT cars, I think Super Touring. Last year they needed to run on street tires so I didn't consider it. But now the WC cars are on slicks, need to check SCCA rules and see if slicks are allowed, seems they still requre DOT tires as I read it.

just checked and looks like the accepted my Grand Am idea for GT1!!

997 GT3 Cup
Shall run as delivered for the GT3 Cup Challenge except that tires are
unrestricted and fuel per IT specs. Cars shall meet the safety requirements
as specified in the GCR except that original, factory installed roll cage is
permitted. Competitors shall have a copy of the Cup Challenge rules in
their possession. Minimum weight 2710 lbs w/ driver. Alternatively, may
run in conformance with the Grand-Am specification. Competitors shall
have a copy of the Grand-Am rules in their possession. Minimum weight
2710 lbs with driver.

A full WC spec 997 Cup would do fairly well in GT1 at tracks that are tight and twisty but I think tracks like Road America and Atlanta would have the GT1 cars blowing by them....would be cool to see a full WC spec 997 Cup with Michelin slicks on it going against a Trans Am type GT1 car.......but I would't want to have any contact with them!

Yes, that's the problem... when I was running GT2 the GIANT FIBERGLASS GT1 cars would push me around all the time, a fender bang to them was just like a tap on the shoulder... I know I could be top 3 in GT1 at Lime Rock but I fear that would require a lot of bodywork after the race.

Was that at the National/Runoff level? Or just regional events?

I'll probably just enter the car in GT1 for now as I just want to finish the national license requirements. As long as I'm out on track with a bunch of other cars racing, I don't really care what class I'm in. Hopefully there isn't much (if any) contact though... I'd rather not go through my spares package at local events!

If it ends up raining like the forecast shows next weekend, we'll probably all be out there looking like fools. :-)

James, how did the car you were in fair in the ALMS race yesterday? I seen your name scroll by a couple times, but didn't catch you on the broadcast in the car.

If it rains you could probably win... they can't put the power down in the wet and that's their essence.

I ran GT2 in National races and the runoffs, that's where I had some contact. I also ran some regionals in my old car in GT2 and I was careful so no contact.

Good luck!
