Default Lexan windshields

With PCA allowing lexan front windshields, What are the pros and cons using lexan. I was told they glare and are not durable and scratch easy?? What is every ones opinion?
Another question is, Does anyone use tear offs and the pro and cons of them?

Polycarbonate material varies in quality. Lexan is a brand, not a type, kind of like Kleenex is a tissue. Most of the manufacturers use better material, but I'd ask. I have a 1/4" thick windscreen that has a coating on the outside to shed water, kind of like a permenant rainx so you don't need wipers, and an anti fog on the inside so you don't need air conditioning. It has been on the car for 2 years now and looks fine, and is beginning to lightly pit like a standard Porsche windscreen does. The only thing I don't like about the windscreen is that is does move at speeds over 100mph and as a passenger, you tend to concentrate on the fact that it is moving. As a driver, I don't notice it unless I look for it.

SABIC (Formerly GE Plastics) has some nice "lexan" sheet materials.

Geoffrey did you use "Shields" for the windscreen ? Did you need a windshield guy to install it ?

Shields is a good windscreen manufacturer and I can recommend them. Mine is not from them and I cannot remember where I got it. My first one from Spektr products was awful and fit awful. I installed the windscreen myself using the factory rubber gasket and safety wired it to the cage. For the 996 Cup, you'll have to glue it in.

In the 90's I used Five Star Bodies. They have .250" Lexan with
a scratch resistant material. I had to ask for the C-2 cut. I never had a problem with the fit. They are located in Twin Lakes, WI.
See if they still have a tinted version, I don't think you would
want clear.

Here is link:

Are they allowed in GTC-1 ?

Thanks Geoffery........it is .250" thickness. Dave at TRE Motorsports has some nice Lexan Window Clamps. The front windschield would used 5 clamps and you will have to drill small holes in the Lexan to secure the Lexan windshield. With these
TRE Motorsport clamps, no holes would have to be drilled in the unibody. Dave has just moved his shop near Performance
Products in Van Nuys, California.
