What Triggers Eng Hour Counter?
Hey Guys,
Just got a 2009 cup that should have had 32 hours since new.
I borrowed a MSA-Box II and FINALLY got it to connect (thanks Kurt, thanks Jerry).
ltmot_w = Engine Operating Time = 52.1 hours.
What exactly is this 52.1 hours? Is it with car in motion? Above a certain RPM? or what else? What triggers the ECU to start counting the hours?
(ECU operating time is 103 hours)
Car has 6,900 km, and according to Glen's post somewhere, a good ball park would be 6,900/160 = 43 hours.
Anyway, am curious.
Cheers

Engine hours is whenever the engine is running, in the shop, in the pits, on track, at idle, at WOT...etc etc. The ECU figure will always be significantly more than actual on track time. I use kms as a result, average speeds obviously vary but agree 150-160km/h is a good guesstimate.

Thanks, that makes me feel better.
So, Engine hours = Engine running
And, ECU hours = Car powered up, but not running? (master switch on or Ignition on?)
In my case, as stated above, ECU hours ~ 2 x Eng hours (103v. 52): Sound right?

I mounted a Hobbs meter (commonly used in general aviation) behind a switch that powers the meter when RPM exceed a threshold (I recall setting it to 3,000). That way I have a good record of time on track and not moving around the paddock or the shop. I do not have access to a MSA box, so this is an easy way to get better operating data for timing parts.

Thank you.
Unsure if you got my last reply because the email bounced?
I got the latest Modas from PMNA, and, despite being able to get the display up using the config files, I couldn't connect to the car. I figured it must be the driver, so I used good old Google to search for "driver msa box" (had not been able to find it by navigating the Bosch website). Found the latest driver on the Bosch website, installed it, and all was good.

Do you know whether your motor has had a rebuild and the engine hours on the ECU reset? I am not sure when the ECU logs, I would expect it logs when the engine is running. Thus if your engine reading has never been reset, the two should read the same. That way you have a log of both the engine and the chassis (aka ECU) hours. I can’t imagine the ECU would log hours with it just being powered up without the engine running, but that’s just a hunch and happy to be corrected.

No, no rebuild. All original hours; that I know for sure. So obviously no reset.
And the seller, although not mechanically inclined, was adamant that the car only had 32'ish hours. with lots of time warming up, etc.
Someone told me that on the 991 hours were only recorded once a threshold (3000 rpm?) was reached.
