Don't forget new Helmet Regs for 2018 in IMSA
All IMSA series now require FIA 8860 certification. A standard SA-20xx rating will no longer be accepted.

FIA 8859 is no longer allowed? Thats another added expense if so.

Very much my thought as well, a year and half ago when I bought a helmet I opted for the GP-6S due to the SA2015 cert. - which now it appears I should have bought the GP-6RC ($4k as opposed to $850). None of the 8860's are cheap as you stated!
