Impact Wrench preferences?
Hey Gang:
Thinking about a cordless wheel gun/impact wrench. It needs to be a 3/4" drive (unless there is an adapter 1/2" to 3/4"?), to remove/install the centerlock wheel nuts. Anyone have any preferences? I have been watching the pricing on the Milwaukee 3/4" drive cordless...seems to have enough torque to remove the centerlock nut. Anyone have a favorite? If yes, why so? Thankx for your help. I am hoping that Black Friday/Cyber Monday incentives push me to pull the trigger.

Milwaukee FUEL will do trick. A group of us up here have them. Need the FUEL version to get the extra torque.
Using any adapter really reduces effectiveness. Get 3/4 socket to use

couple questions on all this for whomever:
1. so you're using electric impact instead of air impact almost exclusively?
2. is there enough torque to both tighten it to spec, and to break the wheel nut free as well? or do you use a breaker bar to crack it loose and then gun the rest of the way.?
3. how do you regulate the torque/footlbs both tightening and loosening. ?
4. are you finishing it off with the torque wrench or are you able to dial in the gun to just about precisely the right torque ?
5. any downsides?
im thinking about not using an air gun at all. while nothing out of hand, i hate the potential risk of the high pressure hoses, guns, a connector coming loose, running out of air and having no option otherwise.
and what adapter are you using that has least flex, etc. i see those guns are principally 1/2 and 3/4. that 991 cup is 1"

spq993tt,
Yes, battery power has come a long way over the last couple of years. Even back in the shop we are just as likely to grab the battery guns.
Tighten to a point and then torque. We never count on a consistent tightening with any gun.
You can set the gun to different levels. Removal is just wide open and like I say, we always torque it to final.
Thanks
Ed

You can't use and adapter with the impact. The extra torque will be lost. If you have a 996 the only needs 350-60 fl lbs, the Milwaukee Fuel 1/2" drive is MORE than enough. I have used it on 996/7s for years. Now yes there is the 2/4' which has even more power. Also Heavier. The 1/2" has worked great for me....

Milwaukee FUEL - the best I have ever used . Tons of power 1,100 lbs in reverse . Can easily loosen our center locks . Holds a charge very long and re charges fast

whats your personal take if you have a preference...better than the Ingersol Rand high torque models? heard great things about them.
would like to find a 3/4" drive since the 991 cup is a 1" socket.

I tried the 3/4 to 1" adapter on the 3/4" Milwaukee Fuel and it would not loosen the nut. The torque of impact is absorbed by using the adapter making the thing useless. I had to go to an air impact to loosen a torqued nut.
