Default Porsche Newbie

Hello, future fellow-Porsche-enthusiasts!

I am in the market for, and seriously considering, a pre-owned Cayenne. I have narrowed it down to a GTS or Turbo/Turbo S from around 2008/2009 to around 2012, with lowest miles possible. I want to stay around the $30k mark or under, so naturally the 2012's may be out of the question.

In your opinions, which is the best combination of trim level/year/mileage that you'd recommend (and why)?
I am in the blind right now, so some objective advice would really help.

What are some common/major issues or red flags to look for? What are some rare and desirable options/packages to look for? And what are some "must haves"?
What should the car come with, as far as service records, keys, manuals, etc.

Just trying to establish a starting point, so all of your help is great!

Help!!

Hi guys, so the GTS was sold before I had a chance to get to it. :-(

So now I have my sights on a CTTS. I need extreme help...below are the service records for the vehicle in question. Can someone who has a CTT or a CTTS please help me decipher the records and Porsche lingo, and tell me if it was in the shop excessively---or if the things that were done to it were normal and expected. Just wanted to compare this vehicle's service history to that of someone else's to see if things line up. Please tell me if you see anything unusual or to be concerned with. I am desperately seeking someone's expert and knowledgeable advice...

Dude, you have dropped an encyclopedia on people and expect us to digest it into cliff notes and ultimately a yay or nay decision for you... not exactly an easy request. In addition, the format in which you have posted the information is not exactly easy to digest...

What year is this car?

If you can send me the info in an easier form, i'll take a look.

I realize it is not very simple...but I was just hoping for someone on this forum who has some expertise, and someone who wants to pay it forward to help a future fellow enthusiast out

I'd suggest making it easier - by going through it and removing all the extraneous job numbers, etc that clutter it up. Leave the job description, date, mileage - and someone can probably tell you if it's exceptional or not. Better questions get better answers. A bit of effort on your part might just get you a reply.

Here is a simple example:

Thanks
Like I said above at the end of my post, I have the readable file that's already cleaned up---and I will GLADLY send that by email to someone who is willing to help...
The format just gets all jumbled up when I post the text directly on the forum :-(
Now it's just a matter of waiting for someone to reach out to me, who's actually willing to help...

VEHICLE TOWED IN -CUSTOMER STATED OIL CAP MISSING AND OIL ALL OVER ENGINE
353 734 A CP S40 INSTALLED NEW CAP AND SHAMPOOED ENGINE 175.75

Thats the only item I’d call unusual.
Nothing else to worry about in that list.

I would be leery of a V8 Cayenne that lived somewhere it needed winter tires every year. Looks like it went to the dealer for everything though, and had an extended service contract. I would be looking at that list of work done to keep it running from NEW and seriously consider the commitment you are making. If you can DIY, you can probably afford a Cayenne but it will likely cost a fortune if you continued as the PO did. I would pay to have the cylinder bores checked for scoring. Losing at the Porsche engine lottery will total the car, or double your investment... These are awesome cars but expensive to own, just know the risks going in and have a substantial slush fund if at all possible.

Thanks, unusual in the sense that it's weird that the cap might have somehow come loose by itself? Or unusual in the sense that the Porsche techs forgot to screw it back on when they did the oil change?

Are you saying to be leery, with assumption that the winter tires needed to be replaced every year (which I agree is excessive)? Or are you saying that with the mindset that the PO rotated the summer and winter tires with each appropriate season (which is what I thought you were supposed to do)?

This is a 2009 CTTS, I thought the scored cylinders were only an issue for the 955 Cayennes? Am I wrong on that?

For both of you,
As far as a warranty goes, I am going to ask the seller if he already has one in place, and if it will transfer. If not, I’ll definitely be looking into one.
For this type of vehicle (more specifically the Turbo S) do you think I will be fine with a basic powertrain warranty, or do you think I need to go a step (or two) higher? In other words,, will most of the high-ticket repairs I'll encounter be of the powertrain type, or will they be more widely pronounced?

I am looking into Fidelity options; at the very least, which tier do you think I will be fine with, without spending an astronomical price on the warranty alone?

Thanks again

It is not necessary to review the details of each service event, from day one. Stuff wears out, service activity 3 or more years ago is mostly irrelevant. Those same components may fail again, at any time.

You can count on the horns and water pump failing multiple times, the battery as well.

What is important is this owner cared enough to have seemingly minor issues addressed by a P dealer.

I don't see anything on your list that sets off my alarm bell.

What year is this?

Thanks for your response.

Looks like he never had a problem with the battery, which is a good thing I guess; but I did see where he had to change the key/remote batteries like once a year---do those things really eat thru batteries that quickly?
If you send me your email, I can send you the cleaned up version of the records, so you can easily scan thru them to see if anything additional stands out?

Cylinder scoring is an issue on all V8 Cayennes. Running snow tires isn't an issue, living in a cold climate is. You may be alright with an aftermarket warranty. Just know that those are typically capped at the vehicles current value. In just a couple of years the '09 CTTS won't be worth more than an engine replacement either. The rest isn't too bad. Front rotors are stupid expensive but most other issues can be handled without breaking the bank. Cylinder scoring will ruin your year...

Thanks.

So, let's say the vehicle's current value is $40k; are you saying that the total $$ paid out by the warranty cannot exceed that amount? Do you really think the 4-year repair expenses on this car will accumulate to as much as $40k? For this type of vehicle (more specifically the Turbo S) do you think I will be fine with a basic powertrain warranty, or do you think I need to go a step (or two) higher? You mentioned that front rotors are stupid expensive.
I think the vehicle has PCCB. What is your take on those, as far as cost of ownership and expense?

I will definitely get a PPI inspection done, and ask them to check the spark plugs and check to see if the cylinders are scored or not (I don't want my year ruined...lol). Anything else I should specifically ask them to check that wouldn't normally be covered in a routine PPI?

Thanks again!

If I were to buy another one. I would research and perform a cylinder inspection from below the piston. I'm not sure on the exact procedure for this but I assume it's done through the oil drain. If it is, I would also change the oil at that time and have the old oil analyzed. You're looking at lot for effort (or money if you pay someone else to do it) but you might save yourself from buying a vehicle that needs a $20k engine. And if everything checks out, you've got piece of mind.
Anything else is a crap shoot.
Actually, I wonder if the oil analysis on its own would be enough to detect scoring?
