Post 6 speed 928/944?

hey every one, I was wondering if any one has done a 6 speed trans swap from a 968 to a 944/924.
i was wondering if it would bolt right in or if i would have to make any adapters for the splines on the balanceshaft to the input shaft? Would i have to modify the spare tire box/area? wold the shifter linkage work?
The other obvious question is can i do the same thing to a 928?

According to gentlemen i used to work for, they informed me, when i asked the same question you just did, that it's possible but expensive. As i am aware, cv joints and axles have to be changed to shorter ones because the trans is physically wider. The trans will mount perfectly fine without having gas tank or spare tire issues. Different torque tube since the trans is longer as well. And also a few modifications to the shifter area since the gates are wider they weren't sure if it would fit in stock area. I also assume that if you have to change the torque tube, a different clutch assembly will be in order, but don't quote me on it. Basically, when all is said and done, it's probably cheaper to rebuild the stock trans and change the gearing to something more suited to your needs.

forget 928 (absolutely different box), but swapping 968 and 944 gearboxes is not a big deal.
Easiest it will be with newer 944. Halfaxles are different length and need to be changed aswell.
I have an experience, that we drove to Sweden with my friend's 968 with original box, swapped it in Goteborg for 944S2 LSD gearbox and returned back. There was some minor things to do, to fit the halfaxles and gear lever, but it isn't anything special if you use your head.

NB! As we later found out, it wasn't good idea to use 5-speed 944S2 box together with 968 engine, although it had LSD and original box didn't. 968 variocam engine just needs it's 5th and 6th gear which are in the place of 944's 5th.

My 88 944 has a 968 gearbox in it. I paid 1500 for the box and the j-yard let me swap all other necesary components. The only problem I had was that the 968 has no place for a speed sensor, so I had to install ABS to get the speedo to work again.
