Best Mods/Upgrades for 911SC Coupe
Proud new owner of my '82 911SC, drove her 16 hours home this weekend after I flew into Grand Rapids, MI...now she'll be in the garage until Spring...will need some things to work on...she's all stock right now except for the stereo/speakers...the only thing I have ordered is the 930S wheel from Pelican Parts...all of the needed mechicals have been done (it has 105k)...I've read the 911SC FAQ and am interested in what you have done that was "worth it"...I love my wheels and don't want any spoilers, the brakes/calipers are new, the interior is perfect (full leather) except for the dash (seem issue)...
Considering:
Catalytic By-Pass
Factory Short Shift Kit
Heetsheet Exhaust Heat Barrier
H4 Headlamp Upgrade
K&N intake?
Thanks!

Hi Shuey:
I'd offer some input on those items you are considering,....
1) Cat bypasses are generally a waste of money. Installing SSI's and a good sport muffler (Monty) is FAR more worthwhile.
2) Factory short shift kits are excellent.
3) No comment on the Heetsheet; I've not used them.
4) Bosch H-4 headlamp assemblies are an excellent upgrade over USA sealed beam units and even the 7" round H-4's. Among other things, these unique headlight assemblies seal moisture out of the headlight bucket, and go a long way toward preventing rust problems in that area. Be sure and install a set of relays to brighten the output and relieve the load on the switches.
5) IMHO, K&N filters are a waste of money. The stock SC aircleaner assembly and factory element works just fine. Save your money for some suspension upgrades,..

I went round & round w/ a 3.0 liter for 9 years of ownership.
Here is what worked:
SSI exhaust & a dual exit "sport" muffler if possible. Steve W. is 100% correct. I tried the "bypass" and only really gained decibels. You can get a nice dual muffler from Dansk (I had a factory muffler converted to "factory sport" specs).
Euro compression. I went to the 9.8:1 - 3.0 liter set.
Polish intake runners & intake port in the head.
Silverstone non-resistor plugs & quality wires.
Improve the cam timing settings on the stock profile. Set them for how you drive.
RSR lite flywheel & aluminum pressure plate.
K&N or Paper filters are both fine. Don't look for any HP there.
I dynoed this car near 100 times. I ended up with 191.1 HP @ the rear wheels (225 crank HP). The car ran a best of 13.9 @ 98 MPH in the 1/4 mile.
The Weltmiester short shift kit is a nice upgrade as well.

My two cents, right or wrong. I don't know how a muffler by itself will provide the benefit of headers and a good muffler. SSI's, for example, are tuned pipes that help pull exhaust out of the engine. Leaving the stock headers on and putting any muffler on, while certainly an option, won't get you the same level of benefits. I had SSI's on my 81SC, and was very pleased with them. All headers will mean you don't use your factory catalytic converter, although there are one or two setups ($$) with alternate catalytics in the exhaust stream - if that's important for your locale.
