Post Performance chips for 996 - looking for opinion and experiences

Hi all, I posted this question on the 996 Forum and got to responses already, but wanted to see if there is perhaps additional info from people that frequent that frequent this Forum.

I own a 1999 C4 (bought in the US and shipped to Europe) and I am looking to upgrade the engine for more performance and understand that "chipping" is a realtively inexpensive option. Now my questions, which I hope you will able to help me with :

- does anyone of you have experience with this type of upgrade ? And if so, what are the pro's and con's / do's and dont's ?
- would you recommend to do it ?
- Is a factory performance upgrade (refered to as 996 powerkit in Europe for 10K USD) a better bang for the buck ?
- Are there chipvendors that you would recommend !?
- Is it easy to install ? Can I do it myself ?
- Will it affect warrenty / dealer willingness to service the car ?

Looking forward to your response.

Do a archive search on the 993 board, while I have not chipped my car (96 un chippable) I have followed the many threads with great interest. The people that do 993 will be able to do a 996 with no problem. I think you have more options in Europe (FVD,Techart ect.)

Hi:

We can do the 996's (as well as 993's) here as well, but in the interest of preserving my credibilty and objectivity, I will not post anything further on this.

There are other good options beside the European tuners,.................

Guys, thanks for taking the time to respond.

So Steve, I understand from your site that rennlist offers the following for my C4 :

New- 996 C4 DME 18-20 HP ('99.5-2001 Drive-by-wire ME7.x) 0.261.204.790 flash chip $1195

Would you have an answer to some of these questions :
- Is it easy to install ? Can I do it myself ?
- Will it affect warrenty / dealer willingness to service the car ?

THEO / ERIC, recommendations on European dealers would be much appreciated. I am in the Netherlands (car shipped from US).

Hi Dutch:

LOL,... I'm afraid that your ECU must be sent here for this to be done as these are EPROM's and you cannot do this. Normally, this is a 3-5 day turnaround.

Warranty issues are really decided at the dealer level and this varies from dealer to dealer. Some care and some do not. For folks who have a "difficult" dealer in their area, I usually sell them an extra new ECU that has been reprogrammed and they can easily swap back & forth.
