LOL,...Boy, you'll likely get a ton of opinions here but for my money, nothing is better than Recaro. This is what we recommend and install in almost everything.
I would say that a Recaro is better with more of a street emphasis (more comfy, you can move a bit easier in then, and some are adjustable (recline)). For the track, I prefer Sparco. I found the EVO to have a good feel to it. But then again, such is my opinion, nothing more.
If you haven't already, you may want to look over the archives, as Steve said there's lots of opinions on seats. Net, I like Recaro SRD's. They recline, they, optionally, have the sub belt hole, you can get them in a choice of cloth colors and a choice of Recaro logo stitching colors (colors at no additional cost). They provide a pad which is inserted and positioned as needed behind the back foam, for additional lumbar support. Best price I found on them is from Greenfield Imported Car Parts in Mass. They advertise in Excellence. Otherwise, shop around, as prices do vary.
Of course, seats are like helmets - you have to try them on to be sure they fit, and it seems they all fit a bit differently.
Recaro's are great seatsn no doubt, probably the best on the market, but I couldn't convince my wife on the necessity of the expense. I ended up with a seat called "Cobra" They are very comfortable, light and the leather version of the Street seat with adj. back that allows access to the rear seat and the adjustmen for individual comfort preference. I track the car in time trials and Auto cross events and have not been disappointed by the lateral support. I got the leather seats w/ a very nice billet aluminum hinge cover and adj. ****. I paid around 1000each for them, a substantial savings ove the Recaro equivelant. I think they are worth a look.
I bought my Recaro SRD's from <a href="http://www.on-trackperformance.com/recaro_srd.htm" target="_blank">On-Track Performance</a> for $450 ea plus another $50 for sub-belt holes. They run sales occasionally. The regular (current) price is $525. Call and ask about the sales!
I bought the sliders from PAR for about $100 each.
If you can get by without a reclining back, I'd have to say Recaro Pole Position. I've got one and I love it

(unlike most bucket seats, these are actually comfortable for fat *** guys like me (220+ lbs) as well, wide enough)
My SRD seats did not fit on the stock rails. The bottom of the SRD is basically flat, whereas the bottom of a stock seat is somewhat "hollow". The cavity in the bottom of the seat is needed for the operation of the slider.
I was able to mount my SRDs using the factory hard ware. Rails bolted right onto the seat using the prexisting holes in each. Only issue I have is the the SRD seat is very low and its hard to access the bolts to connect the rails during the install and makes taking the seats out difficult. I was wondering if the Recaro rails somehow helped this problem.

I had a tough time with the Recaro sliders, but I got them in. My mechanic has a "sawed off" allen wrench for these tight situations. My problem was the design of my stock Porsche sliders - they just wouldn't work. The guy at On-Track who sold me the seats says that some Porsche sliders will work and some won't. His advice was to try the stock ones first, and only but the Recaro ones if necessary.
To answer your question more directly, I don't think that the Recaro rails helped the problem with the tight fit.
Not sure. "New to me" car was my 1st 944 and I had next to zero seat time before making the switch. I would bet that it is a couple inches lower, though (so - maybe more headroom)
