Default 996 engine mod.

I have a 1999 996 3.4l, I would like to put it on the track what can I do to the engine for it to be stronger and more reliable at a reasonable price. Or is it cheaper to run till it blows them get another one... The car will be used just for the track.

Hi:

Having seen these engines all apart, I do not know if any hardware that can significantly improve the durability of these things. Since Porsche has not raced these motors and the aftermarket has not responded with any performance or race internals yet, i think one simply runs these until something goes wrong and just buy another one,...

There are some performance upgrades that do make a noticable and worthwhile difference such as good performance software and lightweight flywheels and clutches.

The engine is fine to run on the track without modification. The only initial upgrade I would recommend would be a 3rd center radiator if you run in warm climates in the summer...which I doubt is a problem in Canada. For a track only car I would be more interested in other areas like brake upgrades and going to monoballs to reduce suspension shift from bushings.

2nd that on the brakes and suspension. IMO, Cup air ducts, comp/race pads and SS brake lines are relatively inexpensive and must upgrades. With the suspension it is a slippery (and beautiful) slope once you start playing with GT3 sway bars and adjustable spring/strut packages.

There is very little these engines need to be strong and have a long track life. You need to add the third (center) radiator and properly bleed the cooling system when you add it. You need to improve the oiling system. The best for this is to have someone do the "motorsports" mod. I believe PMNA is no longer doing it though, not sure where to go with it from there and lastly add the Brey Krause extended oil sump plate. You should be in great shape from there. The only other thing I have heard that is remotely weak in the engine is the valve spring and supposedly they only become a problem if you muck with the computer and up the rev limiter. 9ff over in Germany makes a camshaft/valve spring kit.

Default "motorsports" mod

What does the motorsports mod entail? Are we talking internal motor/machining work or external add-on type modifications? Any clue as to cost, warranty issue, dealer only install, etc.?

Sorry about that, forgot the word BRAKE as in GT3 RS Brake Ducts.....apparently a big increase in brake cooling for cars that are tracked. You can get them through Carnawal (P96 GT3 Cup Brake Ducts) or I found this source but am yet to order from either. They clip right in and substitute the ones your have. You must avoid lock to lock however.

The motorsports mod involves maching the valve cover to add another pickup and oil pump I believe. I'd call TRG, they probably know the details. I have a 3.6l so it does not apply.

Al, how many kilometers do you have on the car ?? Reason I ask is because it is well known of the reliabilty drama the early engines had. Therefore a high mileage motor might not be worth moding.

As a reference, FIORANO RACING in Toronto did a power kit last year on a 996 3.4 motor producing 355 HP @ the crank. I was told the car went to a Mosport event and was an absolute bullit. Call Giovanni @ 416-741-1696 or on his cel 647-274-1696 if you need more details on the install.

Just called him and he had no idea what I was talking about. He said they did a 996 power mod before but it only yielded 30hp. ?

I know of mods on the 996 NA that yielded 351 HP at the crank.

That consisted of headers, Cold air kit and computer tuning.

If you read Excellence this month, you can read about Champion's F77 package which claimed 25-35 rear wheel HP gains yet when dyno'd only showed 1.5 hp and 8.5 lb-ft or torque.
