Well sir,.........to be perfectly honest with you,.....
If you want MAJOR HP gains,......you need a TT. IMHO, thats the only way you'll get higher levels of reliable HP from these cars.
Adding a turbo or S/C kit (boost) to an engine with 11:1 CR seriously compromises its longevity and therefore everyone must determine how long they wish their engines to last for themselves.
If you really liked the car and trading for a TT was totally out of the question, I'd suggest the installation of a factory TT engine.

I have a 993 c2. Rechip, throtle body, Gemballa exhaust, air filter, good for 295bhp.
Other good additions:
Front strut
PSS9
RS anti roll bars
short shift
18 inch wheels
bucket seats
Next step:
Bought full TT engine from LA Dismantler + rear axles + gearbox + wire harness, etc + big reds. Will add rear 3.8 rsr spoiler (not the GT2) to cover the intercooler and RS lip, more aggressive LSD, LW Flywheel and shed some weight (front lid, rear window and wiper, maybe front panels, maybe doors).
Comparing cost and BHP, this is the cheapest option with highest and most reliable BHP. Serious 3.8 conversion of say 330 -340 bhp will cost you 2/3 of the TT engine and will be expensive to maintain (no more hydraulic valve adjust)...and I can still sell my C2 engine and gearbox (any interested party let me know). Net net I have at least 60bhp more, bags of torque and standard engine....
The car will undergo surgery in December. Will keep you posted

I am not sure you can buy a "new" turbo engine anymore. There are several dismantlers who might have turbo engines. I have seen prices hover around the low to mid 20's. German Auto and Oklahoma foreign are good places to look. You can also look in the Panorama magazine for other dismantlers.
Good luck.
