I’m just wondering what the cause of this sound is. For me it doesn’t sound like a ‘noise’ which should be there.

Its not a noise that should be there, that sound will become more regular. It was one of the first symptons I had with my car along with the same sound but more loud higher in the rpm range. They'll now be replacing the entire transmission because they found metal in there. So if I were you and you have CPO on the car I would pressure your dealership with the matter. What helped me in the end was the amount of videos I took.

Thanks for your reply and the disturbing newsfact. I got a 12 month warranty and already shared my findings with the company who sold me the car (not an official Porsche dealer).
To be continued…

Just another update...

Today I had an appointment with a Porsche specialist to change the break fluid.
During this, we talked about the car and especially about the 'whoo' sound.
He took the time to take the car for a testdrive and luckily the sound was there.

His assumption is that, since the sound is coming from the left side in the motor-compartment, the turbo venting some pressure air during shifting between 2-3 and 4-5, seems to be more a root cause than the pdk.
He made an explicit remark that this is not a sound which should be there.
He told some technical story about how the turbo works and that the mechanics within the turbo could be somewhat faulty.

That said... turbo is moving to be prime suspect, pdk drops on (or maybe even off) the list.
This was already suggested by some other guys on the forum.

Interesting, if your sound is similar to mine ( I posted an video in another thread ) I doubt it's the turbo because that sound occurs aswell when the car runs on electric which means the turbo doesn't run

Interesting, if the sound is similar to the one I posted in the other 2018 pdk noise thread I doubt it's the turbo because that sound occurs even when driving electric and when you drive in the electric mode no turbo spools up

If you had to pinpoint where the noise came from,
would that be from under the hood or some other spot?

My car made that sound before one of the turbos was replaced, and it made it after one of the turbos was replaced. A check engine light and a diagnostic showing low boost indicated a turbo fault. But no change in the sound.
I'm not saying it's not, but I doubt it has anything to do with the turbos, or a least a turbo fault issue, and I doubt it's from the PDK.

I would describe the noise as a low soft whistle (like a whippoorwill) that seems to come from the left side of the engine.

Does the noise in your car also occur at or just before the shifting moment between 2nd and 3rd and maybe between 4th and 5th.
Did you have had it analysed by a technician or do you have any clou what it could be?

It's intermittent, so not sure if it's before, or between (2nd and 3rd). Never between 4th and 5th. It occurs when the engine has not warmed up. No technical diagnosis on the noise because it didn't concern me. There was no hesitation in the car or other issues, just the occasional noise. Also, before getting back into Porsches, I drove a BMW 650 for a lot of years and it made noises. Most dealing with the various electrical modules when you first get in the car and start it up. It wasn't a stretch to assume the whistling noise we're talking about being an innocuous quirk of the car.

I got a 4S a few months back and this is exactly how my car sounds as well (2018 4S ST) I thought it was just a turbo sound and normal, car is up-to-date on service at 29K miles, should I be concerned? it still has CPO.

Facts:
Occurs when shifting between 2nd and 3rd.
Less frequent when warmed up.
Also present in electric drive with no engine running.
Originates from left side of the engine.

Let’s assume it is not the turbo or pdk.

Any thoughts what produces this sound then?
Even if it is ‘just’ an innocuous quirk of the car.

Did anything ever come of this? I randomly heard this noise yesterday, but could not get it to happen again. Couldn't pinpoint whether it was more of an air escaping sound or some type of actuator since it only happened once. I had this 2006 GTO that would subtly moo like a cow when the ABS pump self-tested after start up and honestly it kind of reminded me of that.

I'll share an update to see if it still occurs after my transmission has been replaced.
