Default 2018 971 e-hybrid, How bad can it be?

Hi all, I'm new here and would like to hear your thoughts about the 971 - 2018 Panamera hybrid,
I'm looking at one with 50k miles for $45k, which I find cheap. I'm concerned because e-hybrids, everywhere I see them, have deeper depreciation than the rest of the regular Panamera 4s and even the base models.

I'm aware that the battery might be a big factor since it's closer to the end of the warranty period of eight years, until 2026 in my case. So, is the battery that bad? I've found some information on problems with the 970 models but nothing on the 971. Battery aside, everything else checks all the boxes for me, including the engine and options.

Is there anything else I'm missing? Share your thoughts, the good and the bad, and whether I'm really that crazy to choose this option.

It's basically the risk of the battery dying and having to buy a Porsche battery. You can get a used one's for 6K to 10K but who knows how long they'll last. I believe new is around 25K to replace.

There is starting to be some pop up electric mechanic shops that do cell replacement on like Tesla batteries and I'm not sure if some of them do that with Porsche or if you have one anywhere within in reason near you.

Overall, the cars are pretty solid. You just pay the Porsche tax on parts, labor, and just in general maintenance. Indy mechanics can save you money but its still a 100K+ car at the end of the day your repairing. So don't ever expect Toyota Camry maintenance or repair cost.

I do my own work most of the time and just replaced my front brakes with rotors and me doing it myself it was still about $2500 on 17 Panamera Turbo as an example of just being prepared for maintenance/repair cost.

I'd never buy one or any Porsche, high end Audi models, Bentley, higher end MB/AMG, higher end BMW M models, etc unless you can honestly say a 5K repair bill really doesn't have much effect on your monthly home life, if that makes sense.

Thank you, skylolow, for your advice.
It's good to know they are solid cars. The fact that there is not much information about common problems probably confirms this. I'm hoping the battery on this one is good and lasts long. If not, I'll search for used ones. With time, even the price of a new one might be lower than the 25k.
I do most of the work on my car and use an Indy mechanic for more involved repairs. I currently drive a 2018 Range Rover parts and labor are already expensive.

Depreciation curve should make you happy, not worried, since you are the beneficiary. That car was 120K a few years ago. Heck, even if you have to put a new battery in there tomorrow its a great deal. Some claim the Fidelity extended warranty will cover the battery...

Good luck! Can pretty much guarantee you will love it.

Correct, our extended warranty provider Fidelity will cover the replacement of the hybrid battery, it of course would have to have an issue, we can't just claim it "timed-out" for replacement.

When I looked at the Fidelity warranty very closely, I had many concerns around the hybrid battery coverage. There are exclusions and loopholes for normal wear and tear, degradation, time outs, etc. Thus, if expected life of battery is 10 years and capacity has diminished to 20% in 8 or 0% at ten, you are probably SOL. It is really only covered should it fail catastrophically within normal lifespan due to a defect. Even if it is covered, you may likely get another used battery.

At the time, I checked other EV / hybrid forums. I found examples of people who were declined, I did not find a single person who said they had an HV battery replaced by Fidelity or any other plan.

It has been a while, but I think I have additional details in an older posting.

My advice, Panamera is a great car but stay away from any used Hybrid as battery replacement will far exceed value of vehicle, if you can even get a replacement. . Spend a bit more on an ICE version which will be less risk and less depreciation.

I will never understand why anyone would have bought "new" a Panamera hybrid. So you can save $4 a month in gas with $120k car? I know most of it is the government makes the car companies build this crap.

Can the Panamera still run with a dead hybrid battery?

It’s a plug in hybrid, of course it will run if the battery dies or no longer holds charge. At that point you are just lugging around a couple hundred pounds of dead weight (battery and dc motor).

Does it go into any sort of limp mode, or is it fine "forever" like this?

Might be a cheap way to enjoy a Panamera to just get a hybrid with a dead battery and never get it fixed. The extra weight sucks, but basically like just carrying 2 passengers. Not the end of the world.

Can you send me some info on this warranty? Would I be able to enroll an older 911 (2005)?

No problem, go a head and send me an email, however vehicles eligible for coverage need to be an '09 or newer. tgibson@highline-autos.com (855) 924-1333.

No, it will not still run. For one thing, it does not have an alternator. It will shut down entirely. Many threads on this topic.
