18 Panamera What the heck is that noise!
Does anyone have any ideas on what this noise is?
Car has 30k miles, recently changed plugs, oil, PDK transmission oil change all by local Porsche service center and STILL this noise.
They told me this is normal. NO WAY
Occurs at low takeoff speeds or rolling in traffic at light.
When in neutral and rev up engine sounds perfect.
sounds coming from driver side firewall

I believe my 2818 e-hybrid has similar sound when on running on IC engine. It is the only sound I hear from engine when doing light acceleration, but I do not hear when revving on idle. Not sure it is that loud, but haven't tested it the same way from outside like you. Service center said it's normal, OR they said in fact that they didn't hear anything out of place, so...

Possibly the subject of the attached technical bulletin (and pasted in below for posterity - "High Pressure Pump or Balance Shaft Bracing Wheel".
Mine makes a similar noise, under light-load (e.g., slight grad) and below 2000 rpm. Not as noisy as yours. More so in cold weather.
My car is CPO and Porsche would not repair per the bulletin as "noise" is not covered (so they tell me, I think it's b.s. but haven't had time to dig into to). So I can't report on the efficacy of the fix.

Model Year: As of 2017 up to 2019
Subject: High-pressure pump or balance shaft bracing wheel
Symptom: Customer complaint: Annoying rattling noises from the engine compartment, particularly at an engine
speed of between 1,200 and 2,000 rpm (partial load operation, engine at operating temperature).
Remedial Action:
Find the source of the noise and replace high-pressure pump or balance shaft bracing wheel, depending
on the result of the check.

Update
So I took it into Porsche. Described issue, showed them the videos. They agreed that this is not normal. Advised there was a recall and performed the recall.
Advised me to take it out and see if issue persists. Well it still there, so it’s back at Porsche again. Thank you Thunderthumbs for the PDF. I provided to techs and am waiting to hear back.
As for the recall, it’s to replace positive crankcase ventilation hose and intake manifold with breather hose.
Maybe a solution for those who may have similiar noises.

Aeronut -
Thanks for the follow up. It's much appreciated (always frustrating when I think I'm on the trail to a solution on a forum only to find a dead-end because the poster never closed the loop).
I recently had the crankcase/manifold hose recall done as well; I didn't notice any difference in any noises or performance.
Do please continue to follow up and let us know if it's resolved and how.

Update
I have hope!
Porsche just called, advised they identified the noise. Told me they took car out late last night, with less ambient noises, heard and found the issue.
Stated it was the axle and parts should be in shortly. I don’t have the exact details, was too excited, will update once I get auto back.
Here’s the odd part, since he stated axle, I was worried about costs. He stated it was covered and no charge. Is this a known issue with Porsche?
Let’s see how this plays out.
Should have by next Thursday.
Will keep you all posted

So annoying.. exact same issue on my 2018 Panamera. 33k miles
Dealer told me it was normal and was the high pressure fuel etc etc.
sounds terrible. And I’m out of warranty so wondering if any of these solutions you mention would be covered by Tab’s or recalls??? Idk

That all said.. it is definitely not your axle. That makes zero sense.
There is another thread in here where a guy chased down the cause of this exact same noise and it led down a rabbit hole with Porsche dealer, claiming it was one thing after another…. Guy ended up spend several thousand on various repairs and fixes and still same sound. I’ve taken mine to a few dealers Porsche and otherwise and all said it’s the high pressure fuel pump injectors or something like that and that is normal.
if you open your hood.. even in neutral you’ll hear the same noise you’re hearing while driving and under load. It’s right near the high pressure fuel pumps on each side.
We just don’t hear it all that much in neutral as the hood is dampening it.

Update
Parts delayed, they said car should be ready for pickup this Tuesday, before Turkey Day.
Advisor sent me list of parts ordered. I was still worried about costs or if warrantied, Porsche rep assured me, no charge.
Will keep everyone posted.

But again, how is the axle related at all to this? Makes zero sense. The sound isn’t even coming from the axle. It’s the high pressure fuel

Thunderthumbs,
Thank you so much for that doc.
It fixed the issue!
It was delayed due to parts, didn’t matter as they gave me a 22 Panny 4 Plat Edition as loaner
Noise is gone, Porsche came through
hope this helps others in same situation

That's great news, AeroNut. Congrats. Noises that shouldn't be there are irritating.
All these references to "Axle". I looked up the part number. Indeed it's called an "Axle" but it's about a $2 (yes, two dollar) part depending on where you get it. Though it may be called an "axle", I don't think it's the sort we're all thinking. I'd reckon it's more like a shaft axle then a wheel/tire drive axle.
AeroNut - was this covered under a new car warranty or CPO? My place last told me they wouldn't cover this under CPO... which I've still not yet gotten around to disputing, but any information may help may cause.

Interesting! So when I take mine to the dealer.. what specifically do I ask them to check/fix?
if I just say “axle “ they will assume tire etc.
i have appt soon and would like to have this fixed ASAP.
thanks in advance!!
