I’ve been in the market for similar (2017 and 2018 4S’s). I actually just purchased a 2017 4S from Carmax this weekend.
I’ve probably looked through about 6 months of threads on the 971 Panameras before buying and really only came out with a few things:
Get a PPI done just to make sure the specific one you’re looking at is alright. Carmax doesn’t allow PPI’s, but they have a 30 day return window. So I’ll be getting one done hopefully this week and I’ll return the car if anything too bad shows up. I’ve already had 1 issue in my 1 day of having the car - the trunk won’t latch shut. Car is currently at Carmax waiting to be looked at. Plan for an extended warranty (I got Maxcare with 5 yrs/ 100k odo for $3700)
The 971s are still fairly new cars and the majority are still under factory warranty (particularly 2018s and 2019s in your case). This means most issues are covered and I tend to find people mostly post when it’s coming out of their own pocket. Hence the lack of info on 971s. But generally speaking, I haven’t found any notable issues that weren’t 1-offs in posts.
Make sure to get one with the options you like. Despite these cars being $100k+ new, they are missing a lot of common tech features standard. For me it was 14-way seats, air suspension and a non-black interior as a requirement. My car was $122k new and it doesn’t have keyless entry (comfort access package) for example.

thanks - it'll be my second Porsche and you're right, a lot of the options are ala carte which is crazy for basic items like keyless entry. thanks for the response
Good advice on the equipment. Options cost a fortune when buying new, but add very little to the price on the resale market.
Yes, equipment that would be standard on most mid-priced family sedans is all optional on a Porsche. Paying extra for that stuff makes buyers of new Porsches feel wealthy, important and successful. I recall Topgear griping about this.

Stereotype much? Data point 1: It made me feel cheated, a little grumpy, and broke. But needed to be done. I wasn't about to spend that much money on a car and not have at least the same creature comforts as my Lexus.

I purchased a used 2018 4s last year. Had a terrible roof rattle. Found from this website there is a Service Bulletin out on how they can fix it at no charge to you. Had mine done, no issues now.

I'm been doing research the past couple of weeks, what else should I look for and any troubles I should be concerned with?
If you experience any roof rattles on your test drives, go over rough roads, they have a service bulletin for that repair. North Scottsdale Porsche was hesitant at first to try and fix, then told them they had a SB for repair specs.
I bought a 2018 with factory warranty remaining until 3/2023. So far only a seat memory recall which was fixed. It’s been running great for the last two months I owned it. Tire puncture yesterday but I had the T&W coverage, those 315/30/21 on the back are like $500+. The dealer put a new tire. I have a $400 ceramic Tint on the car. The car is super fun. Look at the window sticker attached. I am willing to sell it for the right price if there is demand. I’d be happy with $95K for it, 17,500 Miles only.
2018 4S Very Big Car for a 5’7”, Coming from a 2017 911C2 Kids love the rear control panel and more room than the 911C2 I tinted it all black 20%…. Looks great

Wow that's a good find!. I'm looking at a 2018 4S and its factory warranty expires next month, CPO gets me another 2 years after that.
My recent 2017 4S from Carmax ended up being a dud, so I returned it. Just waiting on the loan to clear off my name, and I'm springing on this one if its still available.

sorry to hear but a greater one awaits.. what exactly was wrong with the Carmax purchase and how did you find out etc? Just want to learn and avoid them if this is a common thing from Carmax given the price paid.
