When you set to sport, that is when start begins from 1st.
970 Panamera 4 from 2013 here. PDK always starts in 2nd gear, even in Sport mode as far as I can tell. It's when in Sport Plus that it starts in 1st I think (don't know for sure because I don't even have Sport plus). Only time it'll go to 1st gear is if I'm on a steep ramp or if I put the PDK in manual mode.

And that said this PDK on my 970 is buttery smooth: not harsh at all.

If my '14 970.2 TTS is on a steep enough incline, seems to be about a 12% grade or steeper, it will start in 1st gear regardless of mode. Otherwise 2nd gear in comfort and sport mode, 1st in sport+.

So I just had the PDK software update done and now the "lurch" is completely gone. Car is very smooth on stops and starts.

I have found the only time it starts in 1st is when I have the shifter in manual. It will as described above go down into 1st in auto if starting off on a steep hill

My 2018 E-Hybrid always starts in first gear but very quickly upshifts. I am talking in both E mode and ICE mode.

Does anyone know how to check if my PDK is up to date?

Porsche has issued a "campaign" software update for the 2018 Panamera. The next time you take it in they will automatically perform the update. It will then show up on your paperwork indicating the update has been done.

Default pdk noise

I have a 2014 991 turbo. I have a small rattle should inside the cabin at idle. At first we thought the rattle noise may be coming from the rear pully tentioner, but you can only hear the rattle inside the cabin. You can not hear any unusual noise while standing outside at the rear of the car. It is hard to describe the noise , it come and goes and its not very loud, but you can hear it if you try to notice. it is like a rotating metal sound or disk metal rubbing, swooshing sound. Goes in and out.. I think when car is cold it sounds more.
One porsche mechanic said it is the PDK clutch plates.. under low load.. at idle there is a little vidration noise chatter of plates? as soon as you apply load ( rev up a little ) the sound goes away. I replaced the PDK oil and the idle sound is still there.
Has anyone had this experience?

did you solve the problem?

in my opinion this sound is from the PDK transmission / pdk clutch

I have the same whoooo (but only when hard accelerating )- while changing from gear 2 to 3 and 4 to 5 gear

Movie - video on youtube

If you're talking about the "whooooo" noise right after a shift, there are a few other threads about that around here. I have it too just not all the time. It's almost like a whistle. It definitely sounds like air rushing, a blow off valve or similar. It doesnt sound mechanical in my car at all. Of course the dealer could not replicate it.

I've seen and read many threads about this sound, but I haven't found a solution. In my opinion, it's definitely a problem with the gearbox – specifically, the PDK clutch.
It only happens in the second clutch from the even gears (k2 clutch). If the sound also occurred in the odd gears, you might be right that it's related to the air. The air diverter valves operate regardless of whether the gear is in an even gear (2-4-6-8) or an odd gear (1-3-5-7).

QUESTION: You state that it only occurs in the even gears - shifting into the even gears or from them?

as I wrote four posts above - only when shifting at 60-100% accelerating power from even gears upshift into odd gears ( from 2 gear upshift to 3, from 4 upshift to 5 )

Mine only makes the noise on a 2-3 shift. IMO if it was the PDK I think the dealer would be more help.
