Default I need a GOOD BMW forum

Bimmerforums doesn't seem to cut the mustard. everyone's stance is "take it to your indy." they don't beleive in DIY.

Anyway, my 540 has taken up smoking...

only on starts, and I fixed the most common response on bimmerforums. so I need to start looking around for a more DIY focused BMW forum.

that's because most BMW owners don't even know how to put oil in their engine

No such thing as a good forum. I'm on my own with my E36. If I have any questions about it at all, I usually post here since there is more BMW brains in OT than anywhere else.

Try Pelican. Not sure who technical their Bimmer forums are, but their 911 forums are about as technical as you can get.

Not sure how good they are anymore, but I used to visit Roadfly.com as well as Bimmerforums back in my BMW days.

PelicanParts might be a good one. PelicanParts has a division called PeachParts for MB's and they are quite technical with good DIYs.

Sounds like you are not making friends over there.

Try again.

I have found a lot of good DIY for my X5 here: http://www.xoutpost.com/forums.php

Since the motors are the same, maybe you can find some help.

On Bimmerforums, you need to be able to sift through the bull****. I search more than I post. There are some very knowledgeable people on there. I haven't paid for a repair on my either of my BMW's for the past 4 years. I've done partial and full suspension overhauls on both M3's. All of this is was possible from help I received on that board. None of which I would even have imagined doing five years ago. It's possible the E39 people are completely different than the E36 people. Example of last winter's project:

Road fly can be good. bimmerboard and bimmerforums are full of young people slamming down and Xenoning and all sorts of silly thing, but not much DIY. Roadfly is a bit **** if you ask the question and they don't like the way you are asking.

What color is the smoke? Blue - Oil, similar to the 911's tendency to get a little leakage on top of the piston.

Try posting in the e38 forum there. That is the 95-01 7 series. The 740 has the same motor as your 540. Edwin over there is a genius.

Followed bimmerboard while I had my 740i - was a big help. Very informative. Generally less mature than Rennsters, but still helpful.
