The turbos muffle the sound of the engine/exhaust, and this is the sad solution devised by BMW. The M5 engine is essentially the same engine in the 550i, with bigger turbos and intercoolers. It should be called a 550is.

On another note, the redline is 7200 rpm, even though torque drops off a cliff after 6000 rpm. Directly from C&D:

The tach needle will swing all the way to 7200 before it hits red, but it doesn’t need to. The stated reason for the 4.4’s lofty redline is track lappers who may want to hold gears longer, but we suspect the real reason is to pay tribute to M’s heritage of lofty top ends: The old E60’s V-10 spun to 8250. In this engine, Elvis pretty much leaves the building at 6000 rpm, and he shuffles out quietly, as the engine’s fierce guttural blat is heavily muffled by the turbos.

Great idea, Porsche should do it in the next GT cars.
Sharky will be selling exhaust bypass tweeters and the 3.9l amp will cost 200usd for 1000watts.

So to soup it up you go to Circuit City for bigger woofers/amplifier?

Order the current M3 while you still have a chance! I got the 1M and it actually sounds better than my turbo S. I'm ordering mine tomorrow.

Agreed - current v8 m3 is the last naturally aspirated m
8000 red line
And reportedly the next m3 is not available as a sedan and will be a triple turbo in line 6 likely with exhaust running thru the speakers
