How good was the 80's 944?
#2
I have owned 2 in the past - a base 86 and 89 turbo. The base car was fun for back then but is slow by todays standards. The 89 turbo with a chip and exhaust was seriously quick and fun. It is a very balanced car that it fun to drive on a budget. The body panel gaps are so wide that when I look at them today, that is the first thing I notice.

This is comforting to hear. I'm still learning the turbo lingo. I've recently read the term "turbo trim" which is a fraction value similar to B.S.F.C. and it occurred to me that it might be the equivalent for the purpose of expected horsepower calculation. If this isn't so then what exactly is meant by this term?

I really enjoyed my '87 944. More handling and balance than power, but easy to live with. And the most practical and family-friendly Porsche sports/GT that I ever owned, with a back seat big enough for kids and huge cargo area easy to access through the hatch. The 944 turbo took that great chassis balance and gave it more than enough power, for a car that posted better lap times than the contemporary 911.
As for SVO's and hot hatches that could "beat" a 944, what does that mean?

More than aura, I still think the driving feel (not the least of which comes from rear-wheel drive) is significantly better. But you make your own call.

I very been driving 944s since the 80s
and been tracking them for decades, tons of fun, one of the best handling cars in the 80s and 90s, the 951s were fast, and could be made very FAST..
I still have an 87 944S, street track car, a 968(the reason I'm willing to sell the 944S and a 924S(getting cheated).
as I said, I have been tracking 944s since the 80s
plus they can haul a lot of Stuff....
So, I say BS to the worst car to wear a Porsche badge.
