Description:
For sale is my 96 944 that suffered an engine bay electrical fire, primarily on driver’s side near firewall. This is reparable and would be a worthwhile project for someone due to the amount of work recently done, could be parted out, or turned into a track car or champ car.
RECENT WORK:
I bought the car last August with 117,000 miles, knowing that it was time for timing/balance shaft belts, water pump, etc. and that the oil cooler to oil pan seal needed replacement. I kept the car in my garage till my local shop could spend the time on the car starting in mid-December. While we were doing belts and oil cooler seal, we decided to pull the engine and look at everything under the hood. $4900 later, we had: · Valve job with guides
· Head gasket
· All engine gaskets and seals
· Water pump
· Radiator hoses
· Balance and timing belts
· Motor mounts
· New power steering pump
· New AC compressor and R134 conversion
· Transmission lube
· Fresh oil, filter, coolant, plugs, misc.
Have receipts for this work.
While head and oil pan were off, we confirmed bores were excellent. No indication of bearing wear on crank. All in all, good for 117,000 mi.
Prior to my purchase, the car had tires and clutch at 112,000,and radiator at 116,000 along with other work. Also have receipts from Roanoke, VA shop for this work.
DAMAGE:
Experienced an under hood fire that was confined to left side of engine bay and top of compartment only, no damage to lower engine components (See photos) or right side of engine bay. Hood was scorched and plastic and rubber on driver’s side of engine bay is toast. I did not open hood so fire was more smoldering than flame.
On closer inspection today, fire did not go lower than intake manifold. Obviously, airbox, ductwork, fuel injectors, wiring and a host of small bits are gone along with header tank, air valve (?), master cylinders, etc. Master cylinder and oil fill cap will need replacement as well. Throttle body and intake manifold look intact. Battery, washer reservoir, and passenger side are unharmed. Hood is charred but not warped and opens/latches properly. New AC compressor and power steering pump are fine.
DESCRIPTION:
1986 944, Kalahari Beige, brown interior, manual transmission. 117,000 miles. No accidents, no rust. Paint is good except for hood (blistered) and a portion of the left fender (discoloration). Car has a fair amount of chips and a couple of very minor dents (PDR would work).
Sunroof motor works. Windows work. All lights including flip up headlights worked (prior to fire …. wiring). Interior is good with wear on front seat bolsters and a small split in driver’s backrest. Coverlay dash cap on dash. Heat and AC work perfectly (new AC compressor and R134 conversion). Inexpensive Blaupunkt CD/Bluetooth replacement stereo with remote. Cruise control did not work (typical). Computer did not work (also typical).
Glass is good, original as I recall. Rear hatch has no separation.
15-inch phone dial wheels in nice condition, with Porsche crests. Out of date Kumho Ecsta tires with very few miles (apparently mostly sat in closed garage) but no sign of stiffness or cracking.
Current registration and NC salvage title in my name. Comes with recent records, sunroof pouch, keys, manual.
