Anyone else have a problem with highway driving in the rain? Virtually undriveable above 60 mph. The car shifts from side to side uncontrollably and becomes squirrelly. Driving on 20 inch wheels, and the tires have less than 10k miles on them. Is it the alignment? The wide tires? I plan to bring it to the dealer, but any input would be welcomed.
How wide are the 20 inch tires? I have 18 inch 255 wide on my Macan and no prob in the rain. Was doing 100-120mph today in light right (no standing water) on the Autobahn, but never experienced anything scary even with tropic-like rainfalls. My tires are fairly new with c. 3500 miles.
We were in the mountains of Virginia last week-end in and out of rain showers and no problems. The car's a hoot to drive. Something's obviously amiss with your suspension, tires, alignment, etc.
Nothing like this with mine, either. I have about 9000 miles on my 21" Summer tires and even with the recent rains this week here in Houston there's no squirrely handling. Worn or misaligned suspension components could cause this, but problems like that should be pretty rare on a new car. Have you hit any bad potholes or clipped any curbs lately?
The car is a monster in the rain, better than anything I have ever driven. I think it is the weight that actually helps to minimize hydroplaning and the Michelin tires.
If the toe alignment in the rear were off it would cause this, but if it were that much off the tires would be wearing really fast with feathering on all treads.
Standing water?
Temperature?
What lane on the highway?
Truck ruts?
If your taking it into the dealer for an alignment? Ask for a before and after print out.
And of course post it here.
I'm taking it in to the dealer today. Hopefully I'll have more answers soon. As far as the previous posts; Yes there was some standing water on the highway, but not enough to cause problems alone. The temperature was in the 70-80 range and I was driving (out of necessity at that point) in the right lane. Truck ruts were not out of the ordinary. Thanks for the input from the forum.
Picked up the Macan from the dealership yesterday. According to the service guys, it was a combination of the tires and the alignment, but they weren't sure which caused which. The tires needed to be replaced at less than 12K miles I feel dumb that I didn't check the tires. Never occurred to me that they'd be so warn in such a short period of time. (Typical wear time for my 997, but unexpected with my wife driving the Macan).
The other complicating part of the story was that the rear driver's side bumper and wheel/tire had been clipped (while the Macan was stationary and the other car was driving slowly) when the car was less than 2 months old. That tire and wheel had to be replaced, but at that time the dealer didn't think that difference in the mileage between the two rears would be an issue. Not sure that it was, but there may have been a subtle suspension issue that contributed to the current issue. Hopefully resolved.
This may sound dumb but ... was it really windy? Here in Florida I have driven in some weather that shoved my 911 around a bit due to storms. Have not had the Macan long enough to drive in bad weather ... yet.
