Question Oil Consumption

Just the other day, after 5000 miles of ownership, my Macan asked for a quart of oil. Looks like I'll finally get to use the couple of bottles of Mobil 1 I still have. Does anyone else here have a thirsty-for-oil engine?

This is just a matter of curiosity for me. I know it's normal for engines to consume some oil, especially when new, and a quart in 5000 miles is no big deal. I got lucky with my Boxster and Carrera -- they burned almost no oil, even when brand new, and my annual drain and filter change kept the level topped up.

I just broke 4k and oil level still looks good. I am a little surprised as I figured the turbo would burn some.

My Macan S had dropped 3 bars on the oil gauge by the 10k oil change. My wife's S has dropped 1 bar at 7600 miles. It's surprising how little oil they have consumed.

My MAcan Turbo called for a quart at about 3800 miles and then again the other day, at 5500, did it again.

I think my oil checking is the same as your Macan. I have a 2015 Cayenne S.
Mine says its right on engine hot, engine cold, engine running, engine not running, going down the road 60 mph. I'm not sure it's even working!.
I have 2500 miles so far. Dealer says not to worry they detuned it so people wouldn't be concerned.
A quart in 5000 is fine almost preferred in my judgment.

Just found the following in a Porsche Macan Service Info:

Determination of the oil level
The oil level measurement is performed while driving over a distance of 31 miles (50 km)
as well as with warm engine (oil temperature > 149° F/65° C) and horizontally parked
vehicle (engine off > 120 sec.) and ignition on.
Determination when topping off oil
The oil level is reset after the hood is opened. The oil level can be measured immediately
when the hood is closed. Preconditions: Oil temperature >149° F (65° C) and engine is off
for longer than 120 sec. If the preconditions are not met, the message “Oil level available
only after short time/distance” appears in the multi-function display. If the vehicle is driven
off immediately after opening the hood without the conditions being met, it is necessary
either to drive for a minimum of 9 miles (15 km) or the vehicle must be stopped with the
engine at operating temperature (oil temperature > 158° F/70° C) for 2 minutes with the
engine off and ignition on in order to view the oil level in the multi-function display. The
quantity difference between the minimum and maximum markings is 1.58 quarts (1.5
liters.) If the oil level indication function fails, the message “Failure Oil level measurement”
is shown on the multi-function display.
The oil-level indicator no longer displays segments as from the Panamera MY 2014. A
continuous bar is displayed instead. In the event of a MIN warning, the warning also
includes indication of the maximum oil quantity that can be topped off.

I'm going to open and close the hood while cold and see if it gives me a message.

Does engine break-in period have any short term or long term effects on oil consumption?

In the last 50 years I have never followed any break in other than not running at high speeds for excessive periods.
Hit red line right away. Never had any cars burn excessive oil. In fact just the opposite. Most of my sports cars I have kept an average of 10 years.
YMMV

I have a Macan turbo with 6000 miles, and it's asked me for a quart of oil 3 times. Twice I gave it to her and once I just opened the cap and closed it to reset it.

I gave mine another quart a few weeks ago. I'm just under 8000 miles, so it looks like keeping some oil around will just be the order of the day for me. It's no big deal. Maybe my dealer will give me one of those snazzy bags to hold the bottles in when I take my car in for a few petty items and my 10k service.

A little over 15K miles on the wife's S. Broken in like our other cars: easy on first 250 or so then pretty much drive as normal. 0 quarts added before first change at 10K; no oil added after that either. Car is a tank so far.

Seems to me the Turbo is more oil thirsty than the S.

My V6 turbo 2015 Cayenne S used no oil in 5000 miles. That is when I did my first change.
See my other post on how I broke it in.
This engine is same as Turbo Macan except it puts out 420 HP.

How can it be the same but put out less HP? Did they put a governor on yours?
