Default Oil over fill

A month ago, I brought my 2018 Macan GTS into the dealer for an oil change. They had a $399.00 deal that gave you lunch and a free set of all weather Porsche floor mats. When I was leaving the dealer, I took a look at the oil level and saw it was down a quart. Went back to the dealer and after a profuse apology, I was on my way. A couple of days later, I get a dash message that my oil is overfilled. I ignore it and in a couple of days it shows all is fine. Now 2 months later it’s back to being overfilled. Anyone else experience this? Bad sender?

When you measure the oil level on the dash where is the level at? If normal, the sensor. If overfilled go back to the dealership.

It's probably just filled right limit and the differences in engine temperature and angle at the time of testing are giving you an occasional overfill warning. If it's worth your time you could ask the dealer to address the issue. On other cars I'd remove the oil filter since it drains about half a quart without a huge mess. On my 2020 GTS I'm not sure it would even drain half a quart with it's upright orientation.

My question is how were you able to read the oil level right after they changed it at the dealership? On mine, it requires at least 15-20 miles of driving before it allows me to read the oil level.

Car (oil not coolant) needs to be at "operating temperature" (I think between 140F and 200F) and stopped for 1 minute on level ground. In my 2022 GTS I can read the oil level if above 140 and engine is either stopped or running. If you don't want to drive from the dealership let the car idle till the oil temp gets over 140 (but its faster to drive the car than let it idle if cold).

Having a fluid extractor works wonders to run down the dipstick hole and suck out maybe a quarter liter in this situation. My 2020 Audi sourced 3.0 liter has a dipstick tube (as do the 2.9's). I am not sure about earlier Porsche engines though.

No dipstick on my 18 Turbo. I’ve overfilled it twice in 7 years. On my model the filter is to the front. That’s close to a quart when saturated. As stated it must be warm and on level ground. I check mine twice a week after my 25 mile drive. I turn it off, grab my phone and other stuff then measure the oil level.

I don't doubt what you folks are saying but, on many occasions, I've driven long enough to get the vehicle up to full operating temperature but not long or far enough to allow me to read the oil level.

Guess I wasn’t clear. When I originally checked the oil, after leaving the dealer, the car was already warmed up. Between the tech doing a test drive’ as part of the service and the car being washed the gauge showed the level was one hash mark low. After they added more oil, the level showed full. About a week or so later, I start the car, in my level driveway and I get a warning message that the oil level is too high but safe to drive the car. A couple of days later all is well. Level shows correct and no warnings. I’ve been checking the level, since then and it shows full. It’s been a couple of months since the oil change and the overfill message came back for a day.
Message gone the next day. Haven’t done any off road excursions or climbed any steep inclines. Car is a daily driver with 62K miles. Thought about hiring an exorcist but they’re all booked up.

Sounds like you are seeing the tolerance of the oil level sensor at or near the max fill level. I wouldn't worry about it and if it bothers you, get a vacuum oil remover and draw out 1/2 liter or so. Having your oil readout below full scale is perfectly fine as long as its between the limits on the scale. If you are getting large deviations in the level every time you start the car then maybe you have a bad sensor but it is not likely.

There have been no deviations in the oil level, as seen on the display. Display shows the same full level, when the over fill message is on as well off.
Yes, I’ve been ignoring it.

In the newer Macans the sensor is buffered such that a a slight over or under fill shows the same level on the dash oil measurement. In your case it could be right at the limit and showing over filled in some cases.

You could always take it to one of the instant oil change places and ask them to siphon out a bit of oil.

i had the opposite problem since my last oil change. Left the dealer and the oil level showed just below the midpoint of the two hash marks on the display. 3500 miles later and it’s showing barely above the lower limit. Had the dealer top it off. I’ve done Blackstone tests on every oil change except that one, and there’s never been any indication of oil burn. I suspect they just barely met the lower level for the buffered display to show almost at the midpoint and it has since lost enough to read at the lower limit.
