That’s two in a fairly short period of time. Insurance companies aren’t going to like this. Why do I get the feeling Lithium battery installations will soon be taking place at or near receiving ports?

Lithium Ion batteries are not just horrible for humanity, the environment and the economy, they are now also killing our precious new vehicles.

Here's a thought,,,,How would you like to live in a condo (sorry apartment house !!) On the floor just above the garage, and have a few EV's in charging stations just under you ?

Long standing building codes are waaay better than the new fangled technology in these brandy new EVs.
There is already supposed to be a firewall of specified burn time duration between living and parking spaces. On high rises there are also fire suppression and alarm systems.
In southern Florida I would be MUCH more concerned about steel reinforcement bar corrosion embedded within concrete on high rise condo buildings, than an EV fire in the parking garage. There are sadly already more deaths attributed to the steel corrosion failure mode than to the EV fire failure mode.
(Don't worry, EVs still suck, even though the risk of personal injury from a parked vehicle is not horrible.) On the other hand, a horrible "driver" in the seat behind the steering wheel, causes a MUCH greater uncontrolled mass to be careening down the roadway, causing MUCH greater damage to innocents than if their butts were planted in ICE vehicles.

I've not an EV advocate but I am not an EV hater either. There is vagueness around an EV actually starting the fire as only 25 out of the 2800 cars on the ship were EVs. The start of fire is still unknown last I read.

But yes EVs once on fire are very hard to put out, that was the issue with the Felicity Ace.
As far as the insurance company comment - VAG is self insured.
So far the only report on what was on the ship I've read was 300 Mercedes so a good bet the rest are VAG vehicles. It was destined for Egypt.

Thanks for the link.
Been involved in fire diagnostic forensics on several fires (NOT an expert, just an interested party representative), I always found it amazing how the experts were able to determine the origin source when all I could see / smell is charred rubble.
If it at all possible, then those experts will determine the origin in this fire.

Lithium-ion battery fires are next to impossible to extinguish. Fire departments tend to contain or isolate these types of fires and let them burn themselves out.

These ICE EV discussions sure can turn religious.

BMW, mercedes, and mini cars now all reported on the ship. cause of the fire still unknown. VW isn't providing any information. EV total is now 500, up from 25.

Hopefully appropriate lessons will be learned and restrictions implemented to prevent recurrence of this loss of life, personal injuries, loss of 3,000 vehicles and potential calamity to pristine environment.
