Dealership Quote for Wheel Alignment - $2,000
#17
I just got back from the Florida panhandle. Mini-vacation with my wife. Before I left, I had made time to have the alignment checked. I did'nt like the on-center feel. Kind of a mild floating and a minimal constant correction of the steering wheel. Annoying. Took it in. Was asked if I wanted to go for a test drive with the mechanic at the dealership. I declined. I didn't want to sway his observations or opinions. He goes/comes and tells my SA it drives okay. My SA of four years tells him "I know this guy.If he says there's something there, there probably is". The mechanic gets it on the alignment rack. A few mintes later, my SA comes over and goes "come back in the shop with me...". I'm thinking I don't like his tone. Sounds ominous. The upper control arm bushings were shot at 62500 miles. Oops... So, I left it with them for two days. Total cost for all new upper control arms and an alignment was over $4,000. My cost was $250 for the deductible (Geico's MBI plan I signed up for right after I bought my Macan in September 2018). Six hundred and sixty miles of I-10 one-way. Nice drive! Tracked really well. Tightened up the feel of the steering as well. Felt 'thicker'. More planted.
Here's the crazy part. I'm on my way to the dealership to get the alignment. A mile from the place, I hear a tink. Another chip. Great. A 1/4 mile later, I have a 3" crack just in front of me at the bottom, but it's cracked downward. No problem, they can repair that while I'm getting the alignment. I pull into the service bay. I get out and walk over to my SA's desk. He goes out the get the mileage and comes back and asked what happened to my windshield. I look out and the crack has gone straight up the winshield! New windshield.
The end result was in leaving it with them for a day or so, they replaced the windshield, replaced the upper control arms and got it aligned. Whcich all I ever really wanted. The glass original bill? $2300! My cost: $50 with my insurance glass coverage.
